Enforced break (no pun intended).
Last Tuesday was a bad day. Walking for my early bus to teach at MCLL, I slipped on the ice damaging my right leg and ankle. I knew it was bad but a neighbour passing by took me home to my garage. With some difficulty Susan got me to the new Royal Vic picking up my daughter en route. They triaged and x-rayed and delivered the verdict. Basically in non-technical language my leg was buggered. A broken fibula near the knee and two compound fractures of small tricky bones in the ankle – the medial metatarsus and something else. They then put on a temporary cast and sent me by ambulance to the General – apparently orthopedics is at MGH (how silly). They then performed a reduction – basically stretching the leg and putting the bones back in place prior to a more serious operation – and put another cast on. This was followed by X-rays and dissatisfaction with the reduction. So they did it all over again and threw in a catscan before pronouncing satisfaction. Normally I would have stayed there and had the next operation on Wednesday. However, since I’m on blood thinners, I had to be weaned off them for a couple of days. They said they would do me Friday or Saturday and sent me home. I’m not good on crutches (yet) and fell over leaving the hospital on the first step. With help from our taxi driver we made it back to the Vic for our car, and finally got home around 11.00 pm. I am still waiting for the second op with screws, pins, plates or whatever. They did call Friday and ask me to fast and again on Saturday to say I could eat until midnight. The op is supposed to be today. Apparently I will be six weeks in a non-walking cast. Probably won't be on TW much for a little while.

Is this the thread where TW posters air their list of conditions?
Could turn out to be the one of the longer threads ever and certainly one of the most wordy!
I'll start posting mine as soon as I've been to the quacks to get a copy of my notes, buggered if I can remember most of what ails.
Good luck with the op Monty, be sure do as you're told.

You know you are a proper old duffer when you don't know what's wrong with you without a cribsheet of GP notes...

Bloody hell, Monty. When you break a leg you don't mess around. I hope the op goes well and you are back on you feet soon.

Ruddy 'eck, Monty,
That's a terrible result from a seemingly simple fall. Is osteoporosis involved?
Kudos to your neighbour for helping you back home.
It sounds like, from what you have described, that it was far from a pleasant triage/hospitalisation/recovery experience. My thoughts are with you, old chap. If you are allowed, then by all means e-mail me - assuming you have available a computer with my address still retained.

John

Re: Enforced break (no pun intended).
Thanks for the good wishes.
I cannot access PC right now so use this tablet.
No weak bones, Dujon, just a poor choice of sitting swiftly on an ankle that had shot under my rear.
The pain is bearable so far (after all I'm a BWFC fan and have practice) but I'm getting worried about boredom setting in.
No idea how our season ended. Probably a good thing!

Re: Enforced break (no pun intended).
I went for my 2-week update on the ankle operation. They said everything looked good and no need for X-Rays. Still at least another month without putting weight on the foot, partly because of extensive ligament damage. They took the cast off (a wonderful few minutes) and my leg was an impressive range of colours from pale yellow to the deepest purple. Stitches were removed and I was given a very large boot instead of a cast. This means I can take it off for various reasons including relief. The downside is we had to buy it for $150.
They had taken an X-Ray after the op when I was still unconscious. My wife photographed their screen to copy the images. In the one below they appear to have fixed the medial malleolus with three large looking screws or pins. The posterior malleolus, barring a wardrobe malfunction of one of the operating team, appears to have been fixed with a button.
I still find it very tiring to hobble even relatively short distances. I used to do 100 yards in a little under 11 seconds. Now it takes at least 11 minutes, with my heart rate off the charts. They will be surprised on my next visit to the pacemaker clinic.
Only a month to go now!
Sorry to bore you, Enoch.

That really is a button!
Re the boot. I hope for $150 they give you a pair so you can get some extra use out of them Monty. Pass them off as modern snow shoes perhaps?

It's called coprophilia (or coprophagia if you're an absolute barking raving lunatic). I don't think it has too big a grip on me yet. The counseling is going well.
