Common Misconceptions

Post by Bruce Rioja » Sun Dec 11, 2022 12:12 pm

Or, should you prefer, 'Factoids'; Items of unreliable information that are reported and repeated so often that they becomes accepted as fact, such as folk believing sweetbread to be an animal's testicles rather than what it actually is - calves thymus; Sex and the City being referred to as Sex in the City, that sort of thing.

We got chatting about common misconceptions last night after I, mistakenly as it turns out, said that 'Walking in the Air' was originally sang by Alled Jones. I've always believed that. I swear that up until that point I'd never even heard of Peter Auty.

So, maybe you too have spent years and years labouring under a misapprehension?

Come on, spill. ;)
May the bridges I burn light your way

Thinking the mild mannered janitor was Henry...finding out it was Penry, relapsing and forgetting again that it was Penry until DSB reminded me on here...

I had the same Aled Jones/Peter Auty thing up until last week.

Hitler wasn't in the Olympic stadium when Jesse Owens won his gold, so couldn't have stormed out as has been repeated on documentaries ever since. He was still a wrong un though

Misconceptions? Dozens, maybe hundreds over time. An outstanding one was: Sherlock Holmes never said "Elementary, my dear Watson" in any of Conan Doyle's stories.
Another, Humphrey Bogart never said "Play it again Sam!" in Casablanca...

Nor is money the root of all evil. That would be love of money.
