The Greatest Ever... World Cup Goal!

Post by ratbert » Thu May 11, 2006 9:29 am

Pish to Maradona's free run on goal and deflection in 1986. Or Sir Geoff's third in 1966. This wins it for me:

Carlos Alberto rockets in Brazil's fourth against Italy at Mexico 1970.

What's everyone else's greatest World Cup goal?

That indeed is a good one, but I vote for the man who invented rapping, John Barnes:

June 10, 1984; Brazil 0-2 England
Maracana Stadium, Rio de Janeiro.

:edit:

Shit, that wasn't a world cup goal.

Seen as though I messed up, here is an actual World Cup one

That one by the Mexican fella in 1986 - the scissors kick.

Sorry for being so vague, but for anyone who knows what the hell I'm talking about, it was absolutely stuning

You mean the greatest goal ever scored in any math ever!

Step up Senor Manuel Negrete.
I write words for a living. I play records for a living. Both of these thing should tell you that I'm a failed musician.

Big Sam should also take some pointers from Aguirre, the manager, he has turned Osasuna in 4 short years from second division strugglers to the Champions League...all if it with considerably less money than Bolton and rotating the players....

There can't have been many better than that ever. When I first saw it I thought "how the hell is that even possible?" Inspired play and commentary to match :)

Bobby Charlton v Mexico in 66 and Archie Gemmell's goal v Holland in 78

If someone could find the links I think you will agree how great the goals were.

I don't think I will ever tire of watching Micheal Owens goal against the Argies!! It was set up so perfectly. No one know much about him, he had scored with a hooked volley the game before and I remember the cries of antisapation as he recieved the ball from Beckham.

Within five seconds of recieving the ball, he had left two World class defenders for dead before slotting the ball into the top left corner of the net. All done without braking a stride against one of the World's best teams in such a critical match, and the reaction from the 200 strong fans I was sharing the bar with in cyprus. It still gives me goosebumps just thinking about it!!

Come one, someone must have a link?

well certainly not the greatest but perhaps the most infamous World Cup goal - Andres Escobar's own goal in the 1994 Cup against USA, which resulted in his gunning down in a Columbian Night club.

One Mr A Hansen kept his job few days later for the somewhat insensitive comment "the Argentine defender wants shooting for a mistake like that."

Always thought Maradona's goal was a Terry Butcher OG. Terry has always denied it but
who in there right mind would claim an OG.

Carlo's goal wins it for me as well. Superb team goal and sublime finish.

Oh my god I've agreed with Ratbert. Need a lie down I think, beer would be better roll on 5 O'clock.

Damn, I get chills every single time I watch that.

I always notice how when he's running away celebrating, he's shaking. I remember somebody pointing it out on tv, and I always notice it.

Nowhere near as good as Pele in his first World Cup against Sweden when he was about 17
