I like your shirt!

I like your shirt!

Post by keveh » Wed May 24, 2006 4:55 pm

After a feature on the BBC looking at some of the best and worst kits in World Cup history, I thought I'd have a look at this years and see who are the culprits in this World Cup. Something got me sidetracked though, and it was mainly the kits made by Puma.

It seems that if you want Puma to make your shirt, you want a fancy design in the background.

Here are the ones I found:

Saudi Arabia: Palm trees?!
Image

Poland: An eagle I think?
Image

Ghana: Stars?
Image

Iran: Stars again?!
Image

Togo: Another eagle. Nice colour though!
Image

Czech Republic: The dragon that's on their flag
Image

Tunisia: Being a bit original here, an eagle
Image

Ghana: An elephant, I think they may be getting the idea now...
Image

Switzerland: Finally, one that makes sense!
Image

Those are some of the strangest shirts I've seen in a long time, half of those images don't make sense.

But obviously nothing beats.....

Have to got a favorite and worst national shirt? Doesn't matter too much if they are World Cup ones.

I think the Polish Puma one has a winged horse, rather than an eagle.

I should know the Polish bit, but I think it's actually a bird either an eagle or a rooster of sorts. Austria has pretty much the same thing in it's flag/crest.

The emblem on the the Polish shirt is a representation of the White Eagle. This bird has appeared on the coat of arms of the Polish monarchy (and continued through republics and communism) since the 10th Century. It appeared on coinage and armorial bearings of the first recognised Polish king, Boleslaw the Brave.

The Austrian eagle is black and probably dates back to 1919, thought to have evolved from the eagle of the Austro Hungarian Hapsburg dynasty - although that one had two heads.

I'm not sure if they were national or domestic shirts, but Chilavert had some quite strange ones. One with a tiger on the front, I think.

I've found a picture, but I'm struggling to copy it here.

Surely the Polish one is a knight or summat on a horse, didn't they charge German tanks on horseback in the war or is that an urban myth..if they did its not very PC is it :) Good for them
