Gareth Southgate and the Pro Licence

So is it not worth whatever paper it's printed on? Should anyone be allowed to manage a football team? Or is Southgate just a baffling choice anyway?

The floor is open.

I wonder why Boro are so convinced that he will make a good coach.

Look at Tony Adams, John Barnes, Paul Merson. All played at very high standards but couldn't turn that into success at club managment. A bit baffling really.

seems a bit too placid for me, just think he lacks the bite and the nastiness to become a good manager

set a dangerous precedent with Roeder - chickens are coming home to roost now.

An odd choice and one that throws Southgate in at the deep end. Terry Venables turned down the job, but this appointment has me wondering if they’ll still use him in an advisory capacity.

As for the pro license, Steve Gibson will have to get the agreement of all the Premiership chairmen, in order to get a dispensation (as happened with Roeder). If the old pals act comes into play again, the license is worthless.

Roeder had an excuse because I believe he had some kind of brain tumor when he was trying to get his license. Don't know if Southgate will get the same benefit of the doubt.

You can't fault the guy’s talent and commitment in that Pizza Hut advert a few years ago though can you?

Isn't the Pro Licence thing not fully enforcable until the 2010 season though?

he's also had 18 months since then to go back and do it. He said he didn't want to do it.

Don't they get it (the Pro Licence) just for turning up anyway? Is it possible to fail to get it other than by not going? Therefore is it worthless anyway? Do qualifications make Howard Wilkinson a managerial genius/guru?

Though Stuart Pearce has done well.

He may have a problem in that he has played with the team, and to then be in charge of those same players may cause problems in terms of getting enough respect

I am hoping this will change the minds of a few prospective recruits.

Or indeed at their own episode with Bryan Robson.
