Luck be a Lady

Post by TANGODANCER » Sun Jun 11, 2006 4:45 pm

One thing that has already emerged, for me at least in the opening games, is the fact that Lady Luck is going to play a major part in the determination of the World Cup 2006:

The weather, at the moment definitely favouring the natives of sunnier climes than ours, the standard of refereeing; ranging from our own "I'm in charge" fusspot Mexican who was definitely not Peter Crouch's favourite official, to the admirable guy who immediately carded a Serbis-Montenegro player who tried to get another player booked. May cheats never prosper. On that topic also we have already seen that cheating has become an accepted part of some team's armouries and something that we will have to be well on guard against. "Win by any means" seem to be the benchmark already.

There is also the luck of the draw; undoubtedly a major fact that may see better teams going home from the "Hell" groups than remain from those of easier definition. The standard to press has been fantastic with our own display well down the merit list. Not in any way distracting from the fact we did the job, albeit not convincingly.

Poland were desperately unlucky to lose, a goal against them that wasn't and one disallowed for them that was, and two great efforts hitting woodwork. S and M played well enough aghainst Holland to deserve at least a point, but only seemed to realise they were good enough in the latter forty five minutes. "Too late the cry".

So let's hope the German weather cools a little, the better referees emerge, we stay injury-free and we get our own slice of luck in all departments. The show might not be over till the fat lady sings, but it'll be the other lady who determines who goes home with the pot of gold.

And now for Senor Borgetti and co..

Mexico’s all-time leading goalscorer, Jared Borgetti has injured his hamstring, and the initial signs look like he will play no further part in the World Cup Finals.

Borgetti, who plays for Bolton Wanderers, pulled his hamstring early in the second-half of Mexico's opening Group D match against Iran, and now looks unlikely to be able to regain fitness in time to play any further part in the tournament in Germany.

Too soon to tell whether its curtains for the Borg or just a short intermission, imv. Think we'll only really know the true extent of his injury after the next couple of days following tests and, possibly, some light training. Just wait and see.

If it is indeed the show stopper that some people think then its a damn shame. I was hoping that the Borg was going to have a really good World Cup which could put him in a good position with Bolton next season.

And Marquez might suddenly decide he's had enough of Barcelona and wants to sign for Bolton. Now there is a player and a half. All over the field and just dripping quality. Oh, lady luck.....

He was awsome today his passing was quality and he always seemed to be involved in the movements. Would be an amazing signing if only....
