What are you playing tonight?

If you have a life outside of BWFC, then this is the place to tell us all about your toilet habits, and those bizarre fetishes.......

That wonderful feeling that only music can bring, when you listen to something for the first time in ages and it takes you right back to a certain place and time. Busy decorating this evening and I popped Moby -Play on the portable stereo. I went from glossing the skirting boards to travelling round Asia nearly 20 years ago.

Not my usual kind of music, was a present from a friend and I don't think I have anything remotely similar in my collection but what a superb album :oyea:

Can't always say where these arrive in your head from, but I found myself singing (well, whatever passes for it), Roy Orbison's In Dreams on youtube..which led to Only the Lonely, Pretty Woman etc...etc, Right now, Sarah Vaughan "I'm in the mood for love" ..and (unsurprisingly) finishing with Ravel's Bolero..Gee, I love that music, have done most of my adult life..A highlight was watching the Halle perform it on their own turf at Manchester's Bridgewater Hall. It was just stunning.... :)

Revolver.

I know it's double hipster to say it's the greatest album of all time (single hipster is Sgt. Pepper. Double hipster is to say that's not even the greatest Beatles album).

All that whilst hamstrung by the dreadful opener Taxman.

I always think talking about "influence" is a cop out way of praising things one doesn't actually like but thinks it uncool not to. But you can trace a huge variety of pop and guitar music of the next 40 years to that album. There's no Oasis without I'm Only Sleeping to name one.

And, and it still sounds incredible. A melodic joy.

Still don't really like Yellow Submarine though.

I liked a few of the early Beatles numbers, Strawberry Feilds, Penny Lane, Eleanor Rigby etc, but the album I always played most was Beatles for Sale. Still stuck with me years later. Just one of those generation things I suppose. Many groups influenced and changed the direction of mainstream music back then, the Beatles were just a part of it, Kinks, Troggs, Animals, Stones Manfred Man, Ramones Bob Dylan, there were loads of groups playing stuff miles away from mother and father favourites like Bing Crosby, Pat Boone and Jim Reeves etc... Top of the Pops, Top Twenty , 45 and 33 rpm wax records and papers like the NME, Record Mirror and Melody Maker brought us what had only been available on radio from America. Radio Luxembourg on Sunday Night was the most listened to music programme in our house. To be a musical inovator back then you needed to play a washboard and tea-chest base...

It wouldn't disappoint me to never hear any Beatles song ever again. I attempted to listen to St Peppers on a flight back from the US. Gave up on it and listened to the redoubtable Dark Side of the Moon instead.

Yeah, I'm in the Beatles, just a band territory too. Though I think And Your Bird Can Sing is their finest hour, and Revolver undoubtedly their best work. An opinion I have held for 25 years, btw. How fcking hipster am I?
