Your Player of the Tournament

Post by keveh » Sun Jul 09, 2006 10:34 pm

So then, the big starts didn't perform.

Who was your player of the tournament?

Personally mine was Malouda of France. Everytime I saw him he was excellent.

Cannavaro for me. He was brilliant throughout.

Cannavero - Italy (Sorry if it's spelt wrong)

He has been a sensation for me. Head strong, yet cool and decisive on the ball whenever his back four have been under pressure. I don't think I once saw him pump the ball up the pitch blindly.

In a World Cup full of divers, cheaters, cry babies, thugs and con artists. I'll go for a player that gave a solid professional performance in every game he played.

I thought Malouda lacked a bit of 'end product'. Zidane was in with a good shout until that love-in with the Everton reject.

The ten contenders on FIFA's site are:

# Patrick Vieira
# Thierry Henry
# Zinedine Zidane
# Michael Ballack
# Miroslav Klose
# Andrea Pirlo
# Fabio Cannavaro
# Gianluca Zambrotta
# Gianluigi Buffon
# Maniche

Not sure how Maniche got on there - token Portugese probably.

Didn't see as many games as I could have but I think Cannavaro would swing it for me too, although his standards seemed to drop a bit in the second half of the final.

Why, thank you, kind soldier!

My standards are so high, I've been voted London's Worst Evening Newspaper Vendor for five years running.

Grosso, fantastic left back for Italy. He impressed me in every game he played in the tournament. I personally didn't understand the Zidane love in throughout the tournament, he only performed against Brazil, the rest of the time he was average IMO.

Is that you stood on the Hanger Lane Gyratory, LGM? Is it? Well will you point out to those bloody Kosovans that my car has the wherewithal for me to be able to clean the windscreen without any help from them, thanks!

can't believe gattuso isn't in there, great midfielder. Cannavaro, definitely the best defender by a long stretch.

Deco and Ribery for me. Deco isn't a diving cheat (in a team full of them), has bags of talent and works his socks off. His passing is grade one. Ribery is amazing, full of pace, trickery and very dangerous around the box.

Well I would have said Lilian Thuram, who I think has been magnificent in the French defence. However, being as he didn't get anywhere near on Materazzi's equaliser I really don't know who to vote for.

I think that the tournament has possibly been more notable for the big names failing to deliver rather than any individual making a name for themselves.

Surprised Philip Lahm hasnt been mentioned. He made the claims of 'Ashley Cole best left back in the world' look ridiculous. Great player. Defo agree about Cannavaro - absolute quality. Lehmann might be an arse but he too had a great tournament.

Until Mexico's exit I would've been tempted to go for Marquez too. His performance against Argentina was certainly one of the best I've ever seen.

I found the contrast painful - whereas England's players seemed to get swallowed up by the pitch, Marquez's performance showed just how you lead a team in a big game.

Good shout with Grosso, Dr Karl. What a player. I'd say pick any one from the Italian back 6/7. Cannavaro shades it for his sheer consistency, Gatt comes in second. I'm a big fan of Pirlo and Zambrotta too.

Grosso would be second for me. He was fantastic. I agree with Zidane being overrated at this WC too. He was poor in the group stages, brilliant against Brazil, then fairly average for the rest of the tournament.
