Re: Pre-season fixtures 2017
Iles describes the trialist as "very interesting".
And now confirms it's ex Hull defender Alex Bruce.

The word is that it's Alex Bruce, son of Steve.

My mate The Bluenose reckons he only ever got in the Brum side due to some scandalous nepotism.

That starting eleven looks to be a 3-5-2.

First chance falls the way of Wanderers as Gary Madine fires off-target from range inside the opening minute. (1) Fylde 0-0 #BWFC

Be nice to hear somebody score for us instead of near misses. Come on Whites , it's Fylde no Feyenoord.

0-0 and it seems the Homers played pretty well. Ah well, we didn't lose.

Re: Pre-season fixtures 2017
Confirmed by Iles, "which makes it four different shapes used in the four friendlies so far." 3-5-2, 4-2-3-1, 4-4-2, 4-diamond-2? Also worth noting C Taylor was played at left wing-back, as BWFCi (IIRC) suggested he might be.
0-45 (3-5-2): Howard; Beevers, Wheater, Brockbank; Little, Perry, Pratley, King, C.Taylor; Madine, Le Fondre.
46-90 (3-5-2): Alnwick; Dervite, Derik, Bruce; Darby, Karacan (Earing 80), Buckley, Vela, A.Taylor; Ameobi, Armstrong.
NB: The BN listed this second-half line-up as Alnwick; Darby, Bruce, Dervite, Taylor; Karacan (Earing 80), Derik, Vela, Ameobi, Buckley; Armstrong - ie 4-5-1 – but Iles' MBM commentary said it was "Still 3-5-2... Buckley playing in the middle. Derik as a centre-back. (...) Two ex-Newcastle players up top for Wanderers".
PP (BN):
PP, bwfc.co.uk:It would have been good for Adam or Will to get a goal but I was pleased with the movement in the second half in particular, some of the football was excellent and bodes well for the season. Adam’s final third play was good, especially the one he set Will up for towards the end. I think Will was bright too. He showed some really good signs and he’s got great running ability to break forward and to join the front players, which we are going to need this season.
We wanted to blend the youngsters with the older ones because it’s good experience for them. It was a good all-round workout, a lovely stadium, the pitch was good, and Fylde are obviously a team on the up, as everyone can see. Perhaps we should have scored a few goals – and we definitely had the chances to score goals – but I think, all in all, we’re pleased with the game.
It was another good workout for us. AFC Fylde are a team on the up and it is an excellent set-up here. It’s a good ground and good pitch and they hosted us really well. We mixed the team up and put the youngsters in with the senior ones which is good for them. The energy was good in both halves and we have enough chances to win it but were unable to take them.
It (3-5-2) worked well for us last season and it’s one I think we’ve got to have in our armoury. We’re not a team who recruits just for one system without having change in our locker. We need to work on a number of systems and we’ll continue to do so. Tonight was a night we decided to implement it and look at the system in both halves and give all the players a taste of it.
We’re pleased we got more game time for Sammy and Adam Armstrong, who is a bit behind in terms of his pre-season and match minutes as well. We were able to get Adam 45 minutes under his belt and he will need more work, but we knew that when we got him. He still showed some great signs of his movement and his ability in the final third. Sammy tried to slot him in a couple of times tonight and it didn’t quite come off but the final-third play between those two with Will Buckley joining in was very good. We need that pace in the team and we’ve certainly got it with those three.
(Jeff King) was very good last year in the Under-23s and we tried to get him into that first team group last year but were unable to. He’s come back for pre-season and looks very fit. He’s had a slow start in terms of his contribution in the games but tonight he showed what we know he can do. He is a very hard-working player but he’s also a player who produces in the final third. Tonight he was pulling off tricks and getting crosses in, we see that all the time in training and all the time last year with the Under-23s so we’re very pleased for Kingy that he’s played well tonight.
Alex Bruce has joined us for a week. He’s a good lad and I’ve known about him for a long time. He’s an excellent character and trained with us yesterday. He did great then and he’s played well tonight. We’re continually searching because we need to strengthen more. The Chairman and I know that and on Sunday we spoke six or seven times on the phone about the plans going forward and we’ve got irons in the fire. The supporters can see that it is piecing together and we will work very hard now to make sure that the next three or four players who come in are really good signings who strengthen not only the squad but the starting XI as well.
It’ll be a good game for us on Saturday and another progression for us. Fleetwood came very close last year and we’re delighted that we were the ones to make it into the Championship. They’ve recruited well again in the summer and it’ll be a good match for us but we’re just concentrating on ourselves at the moment. We’ll get more work into the lads over the next three days and more minutes into the senior players in Saturday’s game.

The teamsheet for the Atherton Collieries game tonight:
Amos, Shackleford, Percival, Bainbridge, Syme, Wright, Earing, Nabil, Woods, Walliau, Hall
Subs: Turner, Hadyi, White, Lonsdale, Fearnley
Who's this Amos that's in goal?

Re: Pre-season fixtures 2017
Based on their names, I'd hazard a guess that 8 of the starting 11 tonight are trialists for the U23 squad.

I think you could well be right. I've only heard of Amos and Earing. 2-2 now.Little Green Man wrote: ↑Wed Jul 19, 2017 8:43 pmBased on their names, I'd hazard a guess that 8 of the starting 11 tonight are trialists for the U23 squad.

Re: Pre-season fixtures 2017
Anyone going to the match this afternoon at Fleetwood? It's sunny, £10 on the door and with a bit of luck, a few decent trialists to be thrown in. Oh, and the pies aren't too shabby either.

#BWFC team to face @ftfc: Howard, Darby, Dervite, Wheater, Beevers, A Taylor, Karacan, Vela, Ameobi, Buckley, Madine.
#BWFC subs: Alnwick, Little, C Taylor, Le Fondre, Derik, Armstrong, Pratley, Trialist, King
Iles says Bruce is the trialist and estimates away support of around 1,000.

Re: Pre-season fixtures 2017
Just back in and what a waste of a tenner. We started playing 5 at the back, but even with Ameobi filling in on the right and often playing wingback, our 6 were outnumbered and outclassed. Fleetwood walked through the centre midfield unchallenged, Karacan was completely anonymous and Ameobi didn't find a blue shirt with a pass for 65 minutes. We created virtually nothing in 90 minutes. By contrast, Fleetwood were organised, classy and worked hard. Their second goal was a peach and well deserved for McAliney (Sp?) who was a class apart throughout.
The new lad from Toon looked OK and showed some useful touches, Alf was busy but frustrated and Madine was poor today, winning little in the air and bossed about by their centre half who was excellent.
I was more frustrated by the tactics (or lack thereof) and couldn't understand what we were trying to do. We played with Buckley and Ameobi out wide, but rarely got the ball in front of them and behind the full backs. We desperately lacked someone to put a foot on the ball and find a pass and resorted to banging balls up to Madine, who rarely won them. I'll never understand the 5 (6!) at the back or what it was designed to achieve. The performance was probably summed up by an attacking move down the right which came up against the Fleetwood back 4 on the edge of their box. the ball ended up back with our keeper as we had no idea what to do with it.
OK, it's 'only' a pre-season friendly, but..............
