Am jibbing along to this. Ameobi isn't - back-knack. PP "promising changes" (Iles), which is good. Little and Henry unsuspended.

I'd revert to 4-2-3-1 from the off rather than halfway through the game; Little and Robbo either side of Wheavers; Pratley/Henry behind Clough/Vela/Morais and, I suppose, ALF. Subs (for me) to include Walker for pace and Kirchhoff for his ongoing rehabilitation; there's another winnable game Saturday.

In reality-world I agree, though would go Taylor over Robinson in a 4 if available. And Karacan over Darren, unsurprising, and not only for statistically insignificant chances of a Jem goal.

In never-going to happen world I'd play that back 4, Henry Karacan and Pratley (Kirchoff if fit) and then a fluid Ameobi, Clough, Vela front 3. Whether it's Zach and Ameobi as split forwards ahead of Vela in a diamond, or with both wider and Vela even more advanced. We don't have a target man so take everyone out of the middle and focus on overloads down the flanks and late runners into the box.

Ameobi is out injured.

There is zero, zero point in putting ALF up top on his own. You might as well play with 10 men.

Our 3 at the back is better away than it is at home. I don't see how we play 4 other than putting Wilbraham up front and that doesn't seem very palatable.

Without Ameobi we're in big trouble as I don't see a viable way for us to get a hold of the ball. Perhaps its time to try something totally different and play Josh up front? Someone needs to hold the ball.

Or we could try (won't of course as in your "never going to happen" world) to make a real statement of offence, actually sending an assault force forward in numbers, push the opposition back for a change and keep them there. Hassle them, harrass them and deny them possession as in days of old. The clean sheet policy is fine (except we don't observe it and keep giving soft goals away) as long as it works and we get the points, in which case winning 17-16 is just as immaterial as losing 3-1 (Saturday) . Try a few killer hawks out there instead of homing pigeons. Bomb a few rasping shots in that the keeper might spill instead of basket ball lobs and wipe the grins off a few faces. In short, show some teeth other than just those of Henry. I might even be tempted to keep Beever/Wheats, Wheats/Dervite, back and stop thinking set pieces are the only answer, and , let Kirchoff venture forth a bit and if Sammi is injured, let Vela, Alf, Clough or whover we play haunt their box instead of ours. They'll already be thinking "we know how to beat Bolton" if we knock a couple of quick goals in and keep pressing. ...Ah, if only....

Yep, I often sit there and think "the answer to our problem is to play like Man City do". Remind me, how much did they spend to have a team capable of doing that? (And lets look at last season when their team wasn't capable of doing that).

Its fanciful. Pretty much every team, apart from maybe Wolves, in this league has good spells in games and bad spells. Its so tight and competitive. Nobody "takes games over". Preston played on the break against us, and did so incredibly effectively. But we've no pace in our side to do that. But Preston weren't bombing everyone on, they just played controlled football.

You aren't converting, Wheater, Beevers, Dervite, Henry, Pratley, Vela into anything other than they are. They're honest grafters, but on the ball, they're never opening anyone up, or doing much more than a simple sideways ball. That's our lot. We've made the best of it, (Saturday we were poor, because too many had an off day). We have to hope we can continue to do so.

I keep asking the same question though, where are the goals coming from?

And I keep saying the same thing in reply; we won't score unless we test the opposition keepers. Just how many shots on goal have we actually had this whole season? I mean effective atacking shots.( How much posession have we had to even do that?) not Wigan up and under rugby specials, not sliced and scuffed shots at corner flags, but genuine pressure attempts. Last season, sending "the big lads" up for set pieces worked well, this season, hardly at all. We're not Barcelona, Man City or anyone else, we have no Neymars, Messie's or Silva type playmakers and we play pass and retreat, not pass and move. I don't have the match attendance these days, but I never miss a game commentary, read every single report and watch what highlights I can. Whatever we do can't be worse that where we are right now (fully admitting everything has been against us as a club for the last couple of years) , so what exactly do we have to lose by sounding the Deguelo and doing a "Into the valley of death" a time or two? Not much in my book.

Doesn't matter who we play up top if the players don't show a bit of composure with their distribution. Poor Walker barely got a ball within 10 yards of him, Alf can't grow a foot overnight and Wilbraham offers us nowt.

As Insane says we are largely a team of grafters but that doesn't excuse some of the panicky poor passing on Saturday. We've enough footballers - Clough, Vela, Morais and Alf and enough pace, allied to said grafters to do much better in possession than we have been doing.

Alternatively, we can just pi55 & moan that we're skint, believe that everybody has 11 better players than we have and launch a succession of long balls whist bemoaning Madines absence.

2-1 win

We'll do these tonight 1-0.

Pratley and Henry back in midfield, unless PP has some whacky formation or plan.

ALF on the scoresheet.

Just got back on line ( two minutes ago ) after a network fault from VM had it off all day today. Perfect time to say...COME ON YOU WHITES... :oyea: :oyea: :oyea:

Seven changes tonight. Kirchoff, Taylor and Flannagan are in to start. Mic man saying pretty words about Reading, but we can ignore that. Not sure if the changes are to give some a rest, but we'll soon know.

Prats and Henry should shore up things a bit in midfield and, as mic man said, Alf has something to prove. Bench looks strong enough and I wouldn't be surprised to see Zac figure somewhere. Chris Price is the mic man as ever, and opens with a chat about scores. Burke replaces Wheats and Buckley is in there. We're away.

Whites masquerading as purple perils tonight, and get an early free kick. Ben wallops forth and...come on lad, rattle on and....Pratd sallies forth, Morais crosses and...is deflected for a corner. Morais then, inswinger and .....Burke and...they clear. Throw to them. Sounded like a lack of support in the box there by us..? And...Buckley, Alf, Taylor and...Flannagan clears. An early goal would really set the pace for us...as they sally and Martin goes offside. Prats clears, doesn't get a free kick as the ref lets play go on. We move forth, they send it out for a throw us in their half. Prats....and gets pushed over..and the ref gives them a free kick. Humph. Goalie is Yakola? as we have a bit if ping and pong. They sally via Aluko but we get a fgree kick from him via Burke. Flkannagan, Burke, Beevres, Taylor, Alf and.....ohhh his cross is cleared back at him then blocked. Prats wins a free for a back challenge that gets Clements a word from the ref.

Moris, in and...they clear and Aluko....sends a cross. Barrow ...and Kirchoff and Flannagan hits a Reading player that gets lobbed over the bar. Alf, Morais and....they clear. Buckley, Henry, Taylor, Henry....they clear. Aluko comes again and Taylor clears. Ben grabs a ball on the bounce. Change it lads, get ahead. Aluko again, Barrow....Flanagan does well and they get a throw. Gunther?....Clements, Aluko.....Clements.....Aluko again and....Prats gives one away. And....almost gets a yellow.

Aluko getting too much mention so far. Free kick them and....it goes well over the top. Goal kick us after fifteen minutes.
And....Prats, Alf...a throw us...Taylor takes and...they clear. Throw them in their own half. Comer on Whites....

Alf tries again, they clear and Alf gets the good words over Holmes. And....Prats, Burke..long and...a throw them. Beevers send one back in....they clear, and get a throw. Aluko again and..Ben steps up and takes charge. Prats, ...and it goes through to the keeper. Gunther at left back....and Henry gives one away. Prats gets nothing, but Flanagan wins a free kick. Ref moves it back and....a throw us and....(Barnsley go one down) Prats annoyed again as he gets nought. Now he dives in and lets hope he doen't make an enemy of the ref. Yakola wallops, we send it back and...win a throw. Some scores etc..Sunderland on down amd Alf gets in there again and wins a corner. Morais and.....time for one and....the keeper is fouled on his line.

Wallop from Yakolo? and...mic man reckons we're doing okay so far. Prats eventually gets a free. Some to and fro and a clearance comes into our half. Kirchoff complains about shirt pulling to no avail. And...Flannagan throw, they clear, we send it back, then Kirchoff loses out to Barrow. Kirchoff steps in, Alf sets off but they clear. Alf again, Holmes clears, Henry and Alf....ohhhh Yakola has to tip an Alf sizzler over for a corner. Come on Whites.....Morais and....and..in and..keeper almost scuffs it but they get a free kick anyway. They sall at us, Alf......misses badly...SHXT.....

A real soft chance and Alf sent it over the top. Corner us now and..keeper punches....Kirchoff loses out and...Taylor clears. We go again and...Buckley hits a soft one. Better stuff from us...apparently. Aluko again, evans, Barrow, Gunthert and he has an elephant touch.

Buckley, Alf....crosses and the keeper collects. They have a bit of a sally via Aluko, martin, Clemets...Aluko again and they go back wards. We get a throw...as a bit of a row breaks out as Evans wallops...they break and Barrow.....scores. 0-1.
