Re: Summer 2020 transfers
Gah! Knew the decision not to immediately factcheck meself would bite me in the arse. (Also, I forgot.)
Well, what with Future Permanent Captain Harry, Curiously Long-Contract Liam and The Big Irishman Of Uncertain Ballplayingness, we're already relatively well-staffed even before Evatt - a former centre-back himself, o'course - gets to that aisle of his supermarket sweep.
Add in Matt Platt, Kean Bryan and Yoan Zouma – whom Evatt will be forced to re-sign after being kidnapped and held at gunpoint by a foaming inhabitant of Krazy Korner - and we could play a team of centre-backs. And that's before we consider Sam Hird, Evatt's former Chesterfield centre-back partner and lately regular Barrow starter (33 of 37 last season) who's out of contract and spoke plaintively this week about him leaving... https://www.nwemail.co.uk/sport/1856118 ... -sam-hird/

Facts - as with The Beatles and Radiohead - are overrated.

Re: Summer 2020 transfers
Anyway, Nixon says we’ve signed Doyle pending medical. “Doyle is three year deal. Good money for the level. Nobody else would match in the end. Big punt. But goalscorers usually come at a premium.”

A three-year contract for a 32-year-old, and apparently on "good money". He could be excellent for us, but I feel a tad unnerved by that.

We cant win anything without goals. Goalscorers come at a premium. Big statement of intent. Putting to bed the conjecture that FV have no money.

Re: Summer 2020 transfers
I guess it’s the length of the deal. 3 years is huge for a 32 year old. And whilst signing the top scorer from the league last time out is a huge statement of intent - you’d probably want us to ensure we don’t put all our eggs into one basket. Or even risk the basket. I’ve no idea what the business plan is but I’m certain whatever it is FV won’t and can’t be subsidising the club in a large way, so we will need to be able to generate income to balance out this expenditure.irie Cee Bee wrote: ↑Sun Jul 05, 2020 10:08 pmWe cant win anything without goals. Re: Summer 2020 transfers
I suppose it could be two years with an option for a third year, which would be more reasonable.
Clearly the registration embargo isn't as restrictive as I thought it would be.

A 3yr deal is obviously the price we had to pay to get our man. At least he'll have three attempts to win the Lge2 Golden Boot again

We're hardly likely to end up wheeling the 4ucker out in a bath chair, and it's hardly like he's expected to go box to box. Proven goalscorer = an excellent piece of business, I say.BWFC_Insane wrote: ↑Sun Jul 05, 2020 10:17 pm

Re: Summer 2020 transfers
Darryl Murphy did well in a struggling side. Doyle will still be younger than he was at the end of his 3 year deal.

Yeah, this doesn't seem to particularly tally with the sustainability line. I guess they must be pretty confident that his goals are going to go a long way to getting us promoted at the first attempt.nicholaldo wrote: ↑Sun Jul 05, 2020 10:02 pmA three-year contract for a 32-year-old, and apparently on "good money". I don't mind one deal like this, but I hope we don't see too many more.

Re: Summer 2020 transfers
You can absolutely say its the price of getting a proven goalscorer and I'd go along with that view. I suppose its like everything - if it comes off then its absolutely superb business. If he gets injured or for whatever reason can't hit a barndoor with a banjo then 3 years looks reckless. I'd agree its a gamble worth taking regardless - we're making a statement of intent and hopefully there will be many more!Bruce Rioja wrote: ↑Mon Jul 06, 2020 8:05 amWe're hardly likely to end up wheeling the 4ucker out in a bath chair, and it's hardly like he's expected to go box to box. Doyle will be a very good signing and I'm sure he will score goals the way Evatt wants to play.
I really hope that we can get Antoni Sarcevic as well, because I think he would be an excellent signing.

Let's say Doyle is on £2k pw, that's c£300k over the period of his contract. If signing him eventually leads to promotion, then we'd only need to sell an additional 1k STs in D1 to recoup the costs.

Bigger wage numbers have been bandied about online but Iles describes them as “bollocks” and politely reminds people we are still under embargo.TonyDomingos wrote: ↑Mon Jul 06, 2020 10:29 amLet's say Doyle is on £2k pw, that's c£300k over the period of his contract. Re: Summer 2020 transfers
By my fag packet maths since he moved to England from Scotland in 2013 has spent all but two years in the north (Chesterfield, Preston, Oldham and Bradford) and only 6 months of that time away (the last six months) was on a permanent contract. At the kind of money you get in the bottom two tiers (and his biggest money move you'd imagine being Preston in the Champo) I wouldn't be surprised if he's still based up here and been renting down south.
That plus 3 years presumbably what seems to have tipped the scales.

Re: Summer 2020 transfers
3 years is not to be sniffed at in the current climate. I do worry that this is likely to be his last contract, so his incentive to impress is perhaps diminished outside of performance related incentives and personal pride.
