Re: Summer 2020 transfers
It’s a curious market. Lots of wait and see. Some
Of those free agents listed above were wanted by their previous clubs but are hanging on for alternatives. I think we might also be quite early back in compared to other clubs because Evatt wants an eight-week preseason to avoid the slow start he had last season. But it’s still a big choice on our part: whether and who to invite to training.

Yaya Toure's training with Orient. It's my birthday on Monday - maybe I can entice him up here with a slice of my birthday cake. We know how partial he is.

Re: Summer 2020 transfers
News of the first Championship clubs' release-lists reminds me that I never finished the lower-league ones. The earlier lists are here viewtopic.php?f=4&t=27117#p1091094 and here viewtopic.php?p=1091324#p1091324 but may now be woefully out of date.

Re: Summer 2020 transfers
Another day at work, another graze through the fields of possibilities: had a look at released goalkeepers, as we'll probably need one. Usual caveats - no proof of any interest - just the more interesting ones with at least some league experience.
First, a couple of Division Two releases before we dip into the Division Four outgoers...
JAYSON LEUTWILER
Swiss goalkeeper released by Blackburn. 6ft 3.5in, aged 31 (DOB 25.4.89) and 6ft 3. Having immigrated to join Middlesbrough in 2012, he's since played 118 lower-league games for Shrewsbury but hasn’t featured much for Blackburn, who signed him in 2017; one of his six league appearances was Rovers’ 2-0 home win against us in Apr 2019.
JOEL COLEMAN
Bolton-born 24-year-old, 6ft 2in, released by Huddersfield. Oldham youth graduate, played 43 third-tier games for them before leapfrogging Saddleworth Moor to become a Terrier. Didn't do much for them but played 16 third-tier games for Shrewsbury in 2018/19 on loan.
DIVISION FOUR
DAVID CORNELL
Northampton's first-choice goalkeeper, 29, kept 13 clean sheets but fancied a new challenge. Derby, Birmingham and Ipswich have been linked.
CONRAD LOGAN
34-y-o, 6ft2 Irishman released by Mansfield. Racked up 250ish lower-league games for Boston, Stockport, Luton, BristoL Rovers, Rotherham, Rochdale, Mansfield and (on loan this spring) FGR.
CHRIS NEAL
34-y-o released by Salford. St Albans born but a PNE schoolboy who made about 236 lower-league appearances for Shrewsbury, Port Vale, Donny, Bury, Fleetwood and The Class Of 92's Vanity Project. Having helped the latter into the league, he remained first choice until January. Once earned a year of free pizza from Fleetwood's sponsor by keeping a clean sheet in an FA Cup game against Leicester.
PAUL FARMAN
6ft5in 31-y-o Geordie; offered an extension by Stevenage but yet to sign it. Knocking on 100 fourth-tier games for Stevenage and Lincoln, plus another 250 or so in upper non0league for Gateshead and Lincoln.
REICE CHARLES-COOK
The Lewisham-born 26-year-old has already played for BWFC – Boreham Wood, in the fifth-division play-offs (they lost today), having been released by Macclesfield. Might have been a short-term contract, as they had to scrabble a squad together after only having nine players left in April. In a spotty career, the former Arsenal schoolboy has made 76 lower-league appearances for Bury, Cov, Swindon (under Flicker) and Macc.

Is there an EFL rule that every 'keeper has to play for Shrewsbury at some point in their career?

Anyway, by the same rationale as above - lower-league experience, not too old. not under contract - here's four theoretical possibilities released by League One clubs.
MARK HOWARD
Yes, that one. Now 33, released by Blackpool (where, in a previous spell, he played three times with Ian Evatt). Nearly 150 third-tier games but just the three in the basement, on loan at Salford last autumn.
JOSH LILLIS
33yo 6ft2 Derbyshire lad released by Rochdale (another en-masse job). 300 or so lower-league games, mainly for Dale, where he was usually first-choice from around 2010 to 2019.
JOSH VICKERS
6ft4, 24-y-o Londoner, one of those released en masse by Lincoln. Started at Arsenal, dipped into non-league, then 100-odd lower-league games over the last four seasons for Barnet and Lincoln.
AARON CHAPMAN
30-y-o Londoner released by Peterborough after about 100 lower-league games at Bristol Rovers, Accy (first-choice in 2017/18), Posh, and on loan at Tranmere (he played in the 3-3 comeback at Watford).
...and two other non-glovewearers who caught my eye along the way...
OLI HAWKINS
Released by Pompey, age 28 (DOB 8.4.92), 6ft5 striker/centre-back, played 77 times in third tier. Scored winning goal in 2019 EFL Trophy final shootout but in truth not exactly goalstrewn – although he bagged 18 in 38 fifth-tier games for Dag & Red in 2016/17.
DOMINIC SAMUEL
6ft2 striker released by Blackburn, so he's possibly just up the road. A prolific scorer in Reading's youth ranks, he scored 6 in 13 on loan to third-tier Cov in 2014/15, then another 7 (plus 4 assists) in 25 on loan at third-tier Gillingham in 2015/16; moved to Blackburn in summer 2017 and scored 4 in his first 6 starts, but then ruptured his ACL. Came back last season without unduly bothering the scorers, but maybe-just-maybe there's a player there.

We still haven't plumbed sufficient depths as a club so as to have reached Dean Moxey's level. Remains the only ever Wanderer who I've been absolutely delighted to have seen go off injured.

Good to see that there's lots of goalkeeping options out there. We could do a lot worse than bringing Howard back imo

Another one who looked like he was trying to get off a dancefloor at 3am with the ball at his feet. He's not the one for the new regime.

Re: Summer 2020 transfers
Howard? I remember most of us being pretty worried when he went off injured at Peterborough as up to then he'd looked much the better between him and Alnwick. He didnt look as composed on his return but it was his late save v Forest that kept us up!
Of the other ones DSB listed that Leutwiler chap intrigues me.

Oh don't get me wrong I liked him as a keeper and thought he looked better than Alnwick early doors, but another one who could just about hit the pitch with his feet.

Re: Summer 2020 transfers
This is a problem with The Evatt Doctrine, and it might not be one that gets properly solved this summer.
We're already severely restricted for choice on goalkeepers - freebies and loans (wage-free, if the old embargo rules still stand). Then we're asking for one who can use his feet. Even Pep Guardiola and his oil money initially struggled with that one - Claudio Bravo was good with his feet but appeared unable to use his hands.
So it'll be interesting to see who we end up with – I guess it could be a younger goalkeeper who's been brought up with the idea of playing out from the back. For all the Moneyball analytics, they're kind of hard to spot; you could look at pass completion percentage (which should be higher for those who play from the back than those who go long) but even the nimblest-footed goalkeeper is at the mercy of a manager who tells him to Get It Up The Pitch. I guess it's good old-fashioned contacts-book stuff, then analyse any footage you can get your hands on.

Re: Summer 2020 transfers
Couple of things I've dug up on some names above
Aaron Chapman, the guy released by Peterborough, is a crossbar-threatening 6ft 7in tall. Or 6ft 8in, depending which site you believe. And if you think that's odd, I've seen his birthplace listed as London, Rotherham and Birmingham. Oh and in 2017/18 he won the Fourth Division title (and Golden Gloves award for clean sheets) with Accy. Didn't realise that before, so now he's jumped up my list a little. (He was first-choice for Posh the following season, but lost his place to new signing Christy Pym last summer.) No mention of his ability with his feet but upon signing him for Posh, Steve Evans said "his distribution is excellent". Here's he, with his best saves of the season before last and (in the last 30 seconds) a couple of nice little touches with his boots:
When Huddersfield signed Joel Coleman, David Wagner noted: “Obviously a goalkeeper must be excellent at the fundamentals of the position first - keeping the ball out of the net – but Joel’s ability with the ball at his feet is also ideal for our style of play." They also clipped up his best saves for Oldham:
Josh Vickers, released by Lincoln (played against us at theirs in January), was described as an Arsenal youth as having "quick feet" and "great distribution skills".

If they're good at keeping the round thing out of the net then everything is a bonus for me. I'm easily pleased and a positive goal difference at the end of the season will do for me

I think you're almost understating the importance of this. The old dogs / new tricks rule seems to plague goalkeepers. Let us not forget how the backpass rule and it's ultimate requirement that goalkeepers learn to kick a moving ball, let alone start spraying it about, brought ends to careers including that of our own Keith Brannagan.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Sun Jul 26, 2020 3:49 pmI guess it could be a younger goalkeeper who's been brought up with the idea of playing out from the back.
I'd love to learn more about the coaching of young keepers in this regard, afterall, by and large I can only imagine that they're being coached by former goalies who themselves have never been called upon to play it out from the back.

Re: Summer 2020 transfers
I think people are getting carried away a bit. Evatt managed at Barrow. I'm sure he didn't have the next Ederson in goal. I'm also positive that we'll not be relying on our keeper consistently striding out into midfield before spraying a 30 yard pass to feet....
Someone who can stop it going in and can (and is prepared to) throw it quickly to feet to get us moving again will probably be where its at....I'd have had Matthews back but that looks unlikely now - I'm sure we'll find a reasonable keeper.

I agree whole heartedly with the point but brought Branagans career to an end? He was still giving us stirling service 7 years after the rule was introduced.Bruce Rioja wrote: ↑Mon Jul 27, 2020 8:37 am

Re: Summer 2020 transfers
I understand Bruce’s objection. And I agree that the goalkeeper’s first job is to keep goal. The abolition of the backpass - which, while we’re here, did a lot more to improve football than the simultaneous establishment of the Premier and Champions Leagues - did cause a few keepers to come a cropper but most adapted and it’s now nearly 30 years ago: our goalkeeper coach Matt Gilks was 10.
I don’t think the recent tactical rise (although pioneered in Holland in the early 70s) in sweeper-keepers is as much of a step-change, and their training can be adapted - they can do some ball work with the outfielders AND the usual throwing-and-catching stuff in their own group.
As I say I don’t think ability with feet will be fetishised above all else - Evatt strikes me as too sensible for that. They’ll be looking at stats for save rates and all the rest as well as whether the guy can pick a pass. The fella Chapman seems to have a bit of both plus promotion experience, so maybe-just-maybe he’s under consideration.
