I don't have a problem with us signing a young goalkeeper as our number one provided he's confident enough. There seems to have been a trend developing recently of young goalkeepers getting opportunities (it's probably that someone spotted a market that could be exploited and others followed suit).

It’s been noted that the three teams automatically promoted from D4 last season had goalkeepers of 21, 22 and 23 with six previous EFL appearances between them.

Two of them were on loan, the other was young master Jaaskelainen.

Oh and two of them lost 0-3 at home on debut, but it all turned out well.

I saw Jim McDonagh concede 3 on what I think was his home debut v Blackpool.

Yep - plenty of debuts have gone wrong. I just hope if something similar happens here, our fans don’t go all big-time.

Was thinking today about that game at Wimbledon - where I met you in the Fred Perry club. All happy memories now but the atmosphere at 1-0 down was horrible - fans offering each other out over whether to back the team or deride them. For all the positivity around Evatt, that wouldn’t be any better in the Fourth. I just hope we have faith and patience.

That surprises me. I was at that game and we'd already won our first two or three (?) so I don't understand the negativity at going a goal down. Thankfully I didnt see any of that where I was stood.

I do wonder where some of the big time stuff comes from. I regularly attend games with Bruce Rioja and Burnden Paddock, none of us will see our 40s again and between us we've witnessed the highest of highs and seen all the lower league stuff before. I'm fairly sure we all go to games with the same blind optimism but accepted the tonkings at Tranmere, Accrington etc with a grim resignation.

Last season I regularly use to see a group of young teenagers walk past our house on matchday heading for the Reebok. All aged between about 12 and 17 and few of them that will have seen us in the Premier league and seen nothing but mainly year after year of attrition. I really admired them.

There is a handful of deluded fans, I'm sure, that see us as bigger than we are. The vast majority though are just keeping the faith hoping for brighter days.

Yeah. There’s plenty of good Bolton fans. But there are also some knobheads. They were playing up that day (at least where I was) because we’d won one game but lost the next (at Blackpool in the Cup) and were losing again to a “f**king non-league team.” Hopefully they won’t have reason to act up.

We seem to be making sound progress here with deals done and a number of 'trialists' seemingly close to a deal. I personally think our swift action has been helped by the structure - a DOF who manages budget and squad size inconjunction with a head coach takes out a lot of dither you see where there is a more traditional COO/CEO - Manager relationship. Manager identifies targets but then COO/CEO or their team have to negotiate and you get back and forth over value and ultimately the actual budget and ideas can fall between the cracks unless the relationship is very very solid.

Whereas Phoenix in this role is able to juggle both sides, presumably is authorised to make decisions and because he works with Evatt and its his sole role we seem to be off the ground running. Proof is of course in results but getting a squad together early is a luxury we've not enjoyed for a long old time.

SIGNING KLAXON

Billy Crellin, Fleetwood goalkeeper, season-long loan

Wonder if this was released at 4pm because there’s another at 5?

That's keepers sorted. Crellin with Alexander and Gilks as back up - in a limited restricted squad - that'll do.

Sounds like a promising young keeper, if you’re good enough you’re old enough imo.

I assume we’ll be going with Alexander/Gilks as back ups for the season. Not sure we can afford to spend a precious squad place on another keeper.

In other news, we can cross off another name from the rumoured potential signings list - Emmanuel Onariase has signed a 2 year deal with Scunthorpe.

Assuming that bell end Barton doesn’t recall him before the window shuts. Fingers crossed. Age no barrier for Evatt!

You'd hope that we insisted on a 'no recall' clause inserting into the deal.

If he turns out half as good as the last defender we had named Ricardo then we'll be reet :D

Watched the NL playoff semi-final between Notts County and Barnet, I wasn’t too impressed. Seem to remember him making two glaring errors but I trust in Evatt’s judgement.

One things for sure, if we’re not dominating set pieces at both ends of the pitch this season I will be sorely disappointed.

Who was the last 'Beast at the Back' we had? A certain Mr Faye?

He’s the same size as Zat Knight.

Evatt says he’s good on the ball as well - hope so cos a big strong centre half who can play is the Mecca of defenders for me! Should be a handful at set pieces next season with this back line.
