I agree with those who say they'd be happy if we continue to exist in a year, but that we're paying 6 figure compo for a new manager suggests the owners aren't worried about going bust, and surviving as a club can't be a sporting target.
It may need to be quickly re-evaluated but even under embargo and wage cap I still think we'll be a big pull at this level. Top 6 for me seems where we should be setting our sights.Harry Genshaw wrote: ↑Tue Jun 30, 2020 8:44 pmI'd hope good football and top half. Play offs in the 2nd season
• Good quotes combining pride and intent (good football, hard work)
• A genuinely threatening signing (eg Eoin Doyle)
• Plenty of intriguing signings
• Sensible comms from club re things like tickets (if there are any)
• A good kit, not that f**king mess we had this season
• Pre-season games display footballing intent
• Keep calm if it doesn't start well
• Team knits together, 10 games unbeaten, top half, playoffs in reach
• Strengthen in January. A big Cup game shows intent?
• Keep run going, get in playoffs?

The ticklist above it has gone slightly awry (no big Cup games), but not hugely

• Most people, or at least a lot of people, stayed relatively calm when it didn't start well
• Didn't manage ten games unbeaten (yet) but six wins in eight is better than a kick in the cock; top half, play-offs 3pts away
Likesay, slightly awry in places, but overall...

Re: New Manager Thread
A decent season is still achievable.
New tick list for me:
A plan B at home - we’ve lost home games because we have no ability to mix up the style of play if it’s not working.
Square pegs / square holes - sign players for the formation (or change the formation).
Consistency.
Look more up for the battle - the lack of bookings in the last two home games is pretty alarming.
Goalkeeper - sort it out. A coach and a non league keeper were not the answer.

Re: New Manager Thread
I think we've got a good 'un in Evatt. He's clearly missing more athleticism in key areas. Central midfield and wide areas. Kioso is aggressive & mobile, but he lacks any form of nous. The midfield is slow and pretty cumbersome, so we leave gaps all over the show when we lose the ball. Which we do. Lots.
The outside centre backs get punished all too often when the full backs can't get back after trying to offer some width and we lose the ball, which makes us susceptible to balls in the box and the midfield don't cover any near as well as they should, again, due to mobility.
I hope we can invest in the summer and in the meantime, do some patching up in January. As BWFCi said, we should look at a little more solidity with a 4-4-2, as the personnel doesn't match the shape we use, but then we could lose any creativity we do have..

Set pieces - Having giant centre backs at this level, should be yielding more goals off corners and free kicks. We should also look a lot more comfortable defending them.

Re: New Manager Thread
Agree, Harry. Every set piece in their box, the commentators mention "the big men" going forwards, but I'm struggling to remember them winning more than 1 or 2 headers all season. Then again, if you recall our early season, we had some really weird n not so wonderful corners...Harry Genshaw wrote: ↑Tue Dec 29, 2020 5:12 pmAgreed, with the addition of;officer_dibble wrote: ↑Sun Dec 20, 2020 10:31 amA decent season is still achievable.

Evatt knows about set pieces - he’s said exactly that on Iles latest bit on BN. When he talks sense I nod along...I really want him to sort it!

He's got 10 games next season. Instant dismissal is losing to the Pies.

Re: New Manager Thread
When we hired him I thought he had something about him. He was my pick. But first half was so bad and he didn’t convince me that he had the fight for it. But second half he showed what he was about. Obviously the recruitment in January played a huge part.Worthy4England wrote: ↑Sat May 08, 2021 5:50 pmWe kept saying it was all fine margins. But this week I think was a real test for him. Pick them up and get them focussed and he did that and more. Got the performance out that this season has been missing where we absolutely batter one of these shitty teams into submission. Today was a battering. We scored 4 and were comfortably better all over. Doing that takes work but I knew we had the players it was just frustrating seeing us always rely on fine margins. Came together today. Which is when it matters.

That Sarce equaliser at Barrow saved his bacon for me. In terms of turning points that was a big one - we showed proper fight that night and I thought we’ll if he can get the players (that we had then) to fight back from 3-1 away, that’s a big positive.

There are some similarities to Bruce Rioch’s early days and IEs. When you reflect. Both arguably saved by away comebacks.officer_dibble wrote: ↑Sun May 09, 2021 10:50 amThat Sarce equaliser at Barrow saved his bacon for me. Weirdly enough Derby County have congratulated their ex player Ian Evatt on his promotion - https://twitter.com/dcfcofficial/status ... 28354?s=21
I suspect this will be the first job he will be linked with at some point next season. Not the most interesting Derby story out there today!
