We will not hammer anyone in this league this season, because the players just don't have that mentality or desire.
Very important win today but to be honest I'm a little disappointed, for a team trying to get promoted that has had a week off compared to Walsall, that was rubbish today from a team bang in form & flying. I really can't understand why they came out so slow & lethargic, why can't they come out fired up & fly at the opposition like they did against Cambridge.

Aye. This thought process, carried out with unemotional detachment, is always an excellent way to check your impressions.truewhite15 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 20, 2021 5:27 pmFlip your viewpoint. If you were a Saddlers fan, are you really looking at that game and thinking you deserved anything more than a defeat?
I'm sure right now there are Walsall forums boiling with rage at the ref, but there will also be fans saying the manager and players just aren't good enough.

I think we were lucky to get the win, game turned on the sending off. But we had equalised and were working our way back into it...plus they looked tired after a midweek game. We may well have won without the red. There’s no denying we look fitter than most teams.
Niggling feeling we are not playing very well at all. Proper test next week - we turned it on v Cambridge and Bradford will need to do so again.

Aye, but just for dibs, the bottom two can still get 61 points...not safe yet!knobpolisher wrote: ↑Sat Mar 20, 2021 5:39 pmImportantly gives us breathing space over eight place.

Interesting fact - the last team Kieran Lee scored against, in October 2017, was Bolton.

And I'd say that History is written by victors here. For all the statistics (two centre backs can knock it between themselves for an hour - wey hey, look at our possession stats) they came at us in the first half and we struggled to deal with it. However, you say that 'the statistics tell a fair story of one team having far more intent to score'. I think the stats possibly do Walsall a disservice.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Sat Mar 20, 2021 5:16 pmI did - and as a football journalist rather than a concerned fan, I'd say Walsall didn't look as good as Bolton. Organised, hardworking, shithousey, but limited and with worse players less capable of scoring.Bruce Rioja wrote: ↑Sat Mar 20, 2021 5:07 pmit would, to somebody who didn't watch the game. I'd say 2-1 sounds a perfectly fair reflection
As a fan, I'm disappointed we didn't hammer them but I suppose more relieved than anything else. But as a professionally dispassionate watcher of very many football games over the years, I'd say the statistics tell a fair story of one team having far more intent to score, and coming close a few times before doing so.
What I would say, however, is that Walsall were possibly hoist by their own petard in their attempts to play the referee all afternoon.

Aye. Another matchday, another bunch of teams fail to win – five of the current top six but none of the five now below them, which also means even more of a caveat over the games in hand.knobpolisher wrote: ↑Sat Mar 20, 2021 5:39 pmImportantly gives us breathing space over eight place.

Think Peterborough went down from the second with summat daft like 54 points one year - but three teams went downWorthy4England wrote: ↑Sat Mar 20, 2021 5:55 pmSuspect it's not 60!officer_dibble wrote: ↑Sat Mar 20, 2021 5:53 pmWhat’s the most points a team has gone down with ?Worthy4England wrote: ↑Sat Mar 20, 2021 5:40 pmAye, but just for dibs, the bottom two can still get 61 points...not safe yet!knobpolisher wrote: ↑Sat Mar 20, 2021 5:39 pmImportantly gives us breathing space over eight place.

Regardless of what happens this season, we need more options up front next season - we just don't score enough goals and need someone who can offer more than Doyle (which seems daft saying he's just scored his 15th goal).
Doyle is a decent player but he's very limited as an out & out central striker, we need better if we are going to progress. I expected so much more from Doyle.

2013. Only one point closer to bottom-placed Brighton than they were to play-off bound Leicester.DJBlu wrote: ↑Sat Mar 20, 2021 6:03 pmDoubt I'll sleep now.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Sat Mar 20, 2021 6:02 pmThink Peterborough went down from the second with summat daft like 54 points one year - but three teams went downWorthy4England wrote: ↑Sat Mar 20, 2021 5:55 pmSuspect it's not 60!officer_dibble wrote: ↑Sat Mar 20, 2021 5:53 pmWhat’s the most points a team has gone down with ?Worthy4England wrote: ↑Sat Mar 20, 2021 5:40 pmAye, but just for dibs, the bottom two can still get 61 points...not safe yet!knobpolisher wrote: ↑Sat Mar 20, 2021 5:39 pmImportantly gives us breathing space over eight place.

Not sure I expected much more than 15 goals in March, but I agree that we need "more" in terms of options. Pace, or power, or ideally both, but something like the sort of opportunity to change tack that our current options in attacking midfield give us.Bertie Wooster wrote: ↑Sat Mar 20, 2021 6:04 pmRegardless of what happens this season, we need more options up front next season - we just don't score enough goals and need someone who can offer more than Doyle (which seems daft saying he's just scored his 15th goal).

Gerrin. Couldn't watch today but glad I saw we won before delving into the thread and seeing the grizzly reality of what transpired.
Not associated with the game but Barrow have been on a tear since we knocked in a last minute winner, eh?

That manager Barrow have is decent I think. Ex Leicester and various others. Struggles when made permanent but is an ace caretaker.

Chris Taylor last minute winner, no less.

Think there's only a couple of teams currently over 50 goals (and one of them is below us) we have 47. The teams above us are all 48/49 goals bar Cambridge.Dave Sutton's barnet wrote: ↑Sat Mar 20, 2021 6:09 pmNot sure I expected much more than 15 goals in March, but I agree that we need "more" in terms of options. I'm not sure the problem is Doyle (although another different option would be great), but our second highest is Sarce on 6? I don't think we're seeing as many goals as I'd like from MF and set-pieces (especially corners)....

I think Delf has 7/8. But yeah the players behind Doyle need to chip in with more - Dapo struggles to hit the target and Isgrove doesn’t get in the right positions. Delf should arguably have a few more really but he really struggled from October and I’m convinced his wag has him on too many nappy duties! It’s why I would start Arthur over Isgrove - lad just creates goals more consistently.
Anyway on reflection I agree with Evatt - teams at this level just don’t go on these kind of runs. Fair play. Looking forward to next week!

It's all part of the great game isn't it? Everybody is in there for themselves. Nobody says "Hard luck Bolton" when we lose by fluke goals or have blatant decisions go against us. As proven today, other teams indulge in cheating, time-wasting ,fouling and play-acting. . For me, take what comes, but that includes a bit of fortune our way too. I punched the air When we equalised today, and cheered aloud at the winner, deserved or not being immaterial. Like any Bolton supporter, I've seen my share of disappointments in my time, so I'm sure not complaining at the dice rolling for us. Long may it last.
