Oscar Pistorius

Will be interesting to watch this, double amputee Pistorius racing in a world class able bodied 400m tonight. Personally it all seems a bit gimmicky, especially considering he hasn't broken 46 seconds.

but he was 2nd in his national championships.

It's all down to whther or not his "equipment" gives him and advantage over the position if he were able bodied. From little I know of these, I'm leaning towards the fact that they do. And if the IAAF ratify their use then realisticly they should never be allowed to be developed further, therefore leaving it purely down to athleletes to improve through training.

I know, but he is in a field with people running 44 seconds regularly - Pistorius is a good 2 seconds slower than that, so although he may compete nationally he will probably finish last tonight. In terms of his equipment, I'd have to agree with you that development of the artificial legs should be stopped at a certain stage, set a precedent so to speak.

This is total & utter bollox.

Great respect to someone with such a tough break making good ... but his "legs" are engineered & therefore their capability can be altered by means other than his own, undoubted, ability, fitness & determination.

No way should he be able to compete against able-bodied atheletes.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

I'm afraid I have to agree. For a start there is the weigt issue alone. Quite obviously he is carrying less weight below the knee than any able bodied runner, not to mention there has to be some sort of flex in those blades to give him extra spring.

It's a bit of a farce... I'm sure that he is very keen to compete against the able bodies athletes (at that level you want to compete with the best) but it's just not realistic.

I mean, what if he broke the able-bodied world record? Would the world say "wow, what an amazing athlete", or would they say it's because of his fancy legs...

He's being questioned about it.

Good job he hadn't married her as all the newspapers would now be calling him The Bridegunner.

To be fair, I heard he'd been drinking a lot. Absolutely legless.
