Okay, I'm convinced that you don't know what good American TV is. I'm not talking about The Big Bang Theory or Jersey Shore.
It appears that you only watch comedy so I can understand if you've not been exposed to the stuff I'm talking about.
At the end of the day it's all opinion. Just makes me laugh when people say modern stuff is rubbish when it quite clearly isn't. People just don't look further than E4 for good TV.
OK now you are putting words in my mouth, i have no idea what The Big Bang Theory or Jersey Shore is, and i dont watch E4,
And yes, i do watch more than just comedy, 24 was very good and is CSI etc, etc etc, as was all of the Star Trek stuff, so im not blinkered.
Oh, and by the way im shit faced, so much of the Yank stuff is currently being forgotten. The classic English stuff is overpowering my thought processes.
It's likely that the stuff I'm talking about you've never seen on english TV because they don't tend to give it the time of day for whatever reason.
Two of the shows I would suggest are The Wire and Breaking Bad. Google them then hit up Netflix for Breaking Bad, you can thank me later

How does naming old shows show new stuff is bad? Need to do a bit more for me.
Anyway. I couldn't name an all time top five, but five off the top of my head:
Omar from The Wire
Bernard Black
Sal from the Sopranos
Chandler Bing
Malcolm Tucker

There seems to be some confusion here. The thread asks for TV characters and I'm seeing lists of actors.

Four years ago I tried to enter a Telegraph Fantasy Football team named 'Muffin the Mule' and they ruled it out on the grounds the name was offensive. When I pointed out that Muffin was hosted by the BBC in the 1950s they very reluctantly relented, but by then three weeks of frenzied emails had passed and my points tally started only from when they registered the team. My team names are now uncontroversial.Bruce Rioja wrote:Is that not arrestable?Lost Leopard Spot wrote: you must squeeze Muffin the Mule in. Rhubarb out!

Re: Who are you top 5 TV characters of all time?
im doing two...
HOME:
5. Jim Royle
4. Papa Lazerou
3. David Brent
2. Malcolm Tucker
1. Alan Partridge
AWAY:
5. Paulie Walnuts
4. Johnny Chase
3. Omar Little
2. Walter White
1. Roger Sterling
tough one between Ari Gold and Johnny, (working off one per show) same with Lane Pryce and Mr Sterling. might have had Dwight Schrute in there too but he really went off the boil later on. I was going to put Larry David at number one, but he he isnt really a character...

Monk is a good shout, but I'd have had Geoff from Byker Grove before I had Geoff Tipps
1 - Edmund Blackadder
2 - Frasier Crane
3 - Basil Fawlty
4 - Hank Hill
5 - Arnold Rimmer
Yup, all comedies. But then comedy gives us the most enduring characters.
