Do you play five random opponents or is there some sort of seeding system?

It's called the swiss system monty. I think the first round is random, then after that you are paired with somebody who is scoring same/similar to you. For instance, i lost in the first round, so in the second round played somebody else who also lost. I drew that so then played someone else with 0.5, then i won that so in the third i played someone else with 1.5 etc etc

I think I’ve got it and it narrows down quite quickly
200 people equal 100 matches of which, say, 80 are wins and 20 ties.
A winner plays in one of 40 matches between the winners of which, say, 32 are wins and 8 drawn.
In round 3 a winner plays in 16 matches between winners resulting in 6 wins and two draws.
In round 4 a winner plays in one of three matches resulting in two wins and one draw.
Thus in round 5 the two players with a perfect record will play for the title.
It seems to work quite well and there will be a bell curve of results with 2.5 the most popular score.

something like that. obviously that's in an ideal world, which is never the case, but it is a decent system i htink.

In others news, currently getting ruined by Athers.

 Me too. The best I can hope for now is what happened in our second game.

You should stay out of chess and stick to making footie comments to the press. You are too good for the rest of us.

In the 2014 Candidates tournament to decide who plays Carlsen next, someone has just blundered away their queen on move 13. There's hope for us all yet.

Some mental games in today's candidates round. Andrekin finally gets a win beating topalov who slipped up massively, even Andrekin castling manually didn't stop him :/ atm kramnik has two pawns on the seventh, but his king is being swarmed by Mamadyarov's rook, bishop and knight. crazy.

Still playing. Athers has chastened me enough online :)

Drew against a 137 tonight. A really weird French winawer game. I messed up the opening, he didn't capitalise as much as he should and in the end I had a sizable advantage in the middle game. There then followed a load of trades and we agreed to a draw as the position looked really equal...until later analysis told me I was facing a very hard endgame!

Funny old game.

crazy game in the US women's championship yesterday. 13 year old beats a WIM in a game where she was dead lost, then equal, then winning, then drawing, then winning
