Won't SK have to compensate the club since it happened on in international duty?Bruce Rioja wrote:Indeed. And sadly it won't be the first time either.TANGODANCER wrote:So effectively (it's a question) if Chungy's injury was serious and nobody comes forward right now, Bolton could end up paying for him to be treated and got ready to move on to a new club for free in five months?
Hope it's nothing serious.

Re: Bijou Bob's Bargain Basement Buys - Jan transfer thread
It's not misguided, it's realistic. Our recent form has averaged aound 1.6 points per game, that's not enough to hit 70 points by the end of the season. In fact that points return would leave us with fewer points than in 12/13 simply because we've started from a lower points total. Thus in order to get to the play-offs (75 points) we have to do even better than we've been doing recently, we need just over 2ppg. Now the teams above and around us will go through rough patches but they will also go through good patches and, on average, their rough patches will be shorter and less damaging than those further down the league. Our rise up the league is quite deceptive because it implies we've been better than we have been. What we're actually doing is moving into a group of teams which are averaging around about the same points return. It's easy to move from second bottom in the league when you have a run of 10 games where you gain, say, 18 points because the teams around you aren't picking up any. As you move higher in the league you find those teams around you are also gaining 18 points over 10 games and your rate of climb stalls. This is also why saying "We're X points away from Y" is meaningless. To cover the ground that X points represents depends not just on the average ppg of two teams but the average ppg of all the teams in and around that area. It's a sad fact that we need to keep playing very well just to stay where we are. If I had to bet on it now I'd say we continue to play as we have been and miss out on the last play-off place by 5 to 10 points.Jugs wrote:I'm not a dyed-in-the-wool optimist, but I have to say that all this talk of us not getting into the playoffs has gotta be a little misguided, right?Whookam wrote:We're not going to get into the play-offs, even on current form we'll be about ten points off. If we could get £1.5 million for him it would help us build a team for next season.Beefheart wrote:If we are talking about £1.5m for Chungy, it might be worth gambling on keeping him and letting him go for a free at the end of the season. He could be the difference between us getting into the playoffs or missing out. Unless of course Lennon thinks he could do something with that £1.5m.
We can still get in the playoffs. We're a form team. Back in 2013 we only just missed out despite not picking up form until end of Feb. Teams above us will have rough patches.
TL;DR? I'm a killjoy and our season is already over. We need to look towards next season.

no we dont, theres 63 points to be had.
we'll do it if he swaps lee for a forward.
lee's going almost stubbsian in his efforts to do one.
hopefully he's out for months and it forces mr. lennon to sort it.

if he's out for months we won't sell him - so we'll have neither him nor the cash...
Re: Bijou Bob's Bargain Basement Buys - Jan transfer thread
we've crept under the fpp stuff for now- i'd worry about that on another day.

It's not your money, thank feck and I don't believe for one minute that you would be anywhere on a list who those at the club would consult.a1 wrote:we've crept under the fpp stuff for now- i'd worry about that on another day.

i'd do the opposite to what they did when cahill were here.thebish wrote:maybe - but it doesn't mean we suddenly have cash!
ie, get rid of him now. rather than use him till june. his 'press' hasnt been great, whereas cahill barely said owt.

We sold Cahill, whose contract was up in June, in January. You may be thinking of Tal Ben Haim, who stayed until his contract expired.a1 wrote:i'd do the opposite to what they did when cahill were here.

At the time, I thought it was a terrible decision to sell Cahill. Still do, obviously.
We're fighting relegation, and sell our best defender (and possibly - our best player at the time).
That has always irked me to this day. Can't help but think if we hadn't sold Cahill in January, he would have kept the odd goal out, or scored at the other end to keep us up, in those final months.
From memory, we got £5mil. In hindsight, was a terrible decision. But even at the time, it was poor.
Completely unrelated, but the saviour (Andranik Teymourian) is playing for Iran against Bahrain right now, at the Asian Cup.

From memory, Cahill was exceedingly average at the time we sold him. We got 7m, which considering he was out of contract was a good bit of business. We arguably should have tried to sell him earlier for more, but the main issue for me is how the successive muppets spent the money...

Think overall we got 7 mill. If true is a brilliant return for a defender we payed 5 mill for and was out of contract in 3 months

I think we got £7-8m for Cahill, which I agree Jonny was still criminally. The Elk at least did us the favour of signing a new contract so that we could get a decent fee, I think Chelsea paid £15m which then Meggo spunked up the wall
Pfffft.

Dunno about him being average when we sold him - i'm pretty certain he earned his first full England cap in a competive game (did he score too, against Bulgaria?) while he was at Bolton. He also scored an excellent winner at Goodison Park in the league, shortly before the sale went through, to boost our chances of survival. Ngog also scored in that match, so too Tim Howard...Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:From memory, Cahill was exceedingly average at the time we sold him.
