"Must See" Places in the UK
Rather than clutter up the reading thread I thought I'd start a new one
So far I have in no particular order the following, and my wife will choose ten of her own places over the next year or so. We're leaving it three years years though because by then we will both have bus passes
Other suggestions most welcome.
Cornwall villages on south coast, mouse hole etc
Lands End
Penzance and St Michaels Mount then to Euston and sleeper to Inverness
Seven Sisters (White Cliffs)
Jurassic Coast.
Durham cathedral.
The copper horse at the end of the walk at Winsor.
Halnaker windmill Sussex
Anglesey and South Stack lighthouse. Menia Straights.
Tenby, south Wales

Another book I can lend you here, Clapton is Bollocks to Alton Towers which is all about alternative British days out and places to visit.
Personally I really want to visit the 'secret' nuclear bunker at Kelvedon Hatch, and also The Drakelow Tunnels (though they're, quite ridiculously, in private ownership.

Lands End is bollocks. Tawdry and tacky at the same time. Like sad Blackpool. Cornish south coast is lovely though. It's like the villages are deliberately a pint's walk from one another.

Agreed, the lizard is much, much, better and they have a belting café in the village nearby.Prufrock wrote:Lands End is bollocks. Tawdry and tacky at the same time. Like sad Blackpool. Cornish south coast is lovely though. It's like the villages are deliberately a pint's walk from one another.
Crantock village and beach is ace as well.
Lanhydrock is well worth visiting, google it.
Helford passage, pub on the front with good grub.

I said Rye earlier. If being expansive try the Sussex/Kent area covering the Cinque Ports, Tunbridge Wells, Canterbury. Getting in Hever, Sissinghurst etc.
I'll happily recommend some hotels if you need. Bruce knows I'm good for a few.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Thanks, Bruce. I had never heard of the Drakelow Tunnels (apparently only brought to public attention after I left the country). Underground factory. Alternative seat of government. Cannabis production plant. What a story!Bruce Rioja wrote:Another book I can lend you here, Clapton is Bollocks to Alton Towers which is all about alternative British days out and places to visit.

None of them have Welsh language signs.
Mind you, many cater to Polish folk, dirty rotten foreigners.

You're welcome, Monty. They've never really been brought to public attention: in fact, I'd say that they're well up on the list of Britain's best kept secrets - which is utterly ridiculous.Montreal Wanderer wrote:Thanks, Bruce. Was there a couple of years ago eating fish that had come out of the sea his earlier with a kestrel hovering at eye level over the rocks below. Belting.

Bollocks to Alton Towers is a great book. And Kelveden (not so) secret nuclear bunker is not far from me. Just off the A12 heading to Southend. Not been yet but I have been to a few of the listed sites in the book. Made a special trip to Tebay Services on the M6 just to try the food. Wasn't disappointed.

Re: "Must See" Places in the UK
I just can't drive past in either direction. Usually just for a scone and a coffee on the way up - always for a bag of stuff from the produce shop on the way back down. Far from cheep but you always know where your extra money's gone by way of quality. Makes a mockery of every other service station in Britain (and trust me, I've visited most ).Gary the Enfield wrote:Bruce Rioja wrote:Another book I can lend you here, Clapton is Bollocks to Alton Towers which is all about alternative British days out and places to visit.

Will it not be the 'First & Last'. Everything down there's called the first and last something or other. I bet it's the same up at Dunnet Head.Prufrock wrote: The most southerly cafe (or a name like that)?

been there a few times... it's vaguely interesting - but basically a huge concrete bunker with some bunk-beds - some "ooh look at these old" phones and computers and a few displays about the nuclear threat...Gary the Enfield wrote:Bruce Rioja wrote:Another book I can lend you here, Clapton is Bollocks to Alton Towers which is all about alternative British days out and places to visit.

of course - back then i usually did have young kids with me - so maybe it is more interesting as an adult with more time to study the exhibits...

Land's End is alright I'd say! Bit of an up and down walk up to the flagpole, but if you're in the area you have to really
I've been to Mousehole and others as other half's gran used to live there which meant a couple of visits. Lovely part of the world.
Dover: not sure how it could be enjoyable from land?
Giant's Causeway as long as you're the sort to be interested in stuff like that... Not sure I'd fly over there just for it but NI has plenty nice country too.
Heard good things about Isle of Skye but not been myself.

I was underwhelmed by Land's End - it's just a case of saying "I was there" really...Athers wrote:Land's End is alright I'd say! Bit of an up and down walk up to the flagpole, but if you're in the area you have to really
what would I add?
Fingal's cave
Farne islands in the bird-season
Ely Cathedral
Llanberis Pass
Glenfinnan

Clearly worth visiting Burton Bradstock in West Dorset.
You can see Billy Bragg's house from there.

Is it literally a stone's throw away, by chance?Worthy4England wrote:Clearly worth visiting Burton Bradstock in West Dorset.

Whereas Stonehenge is an incredible monument and a real wonder, I was stunned at how small it is.
Land's End, as others attest, is nothing other than something to tick off the 'Been There and Done That' list.
I could create a UK tour just to marvel at churches, cathedrals and abbey ruins.
