Re: You take the high road...

some loss of sovereignty ... yes but only in the same way that Belgium France Germany et al have compromised a portion of national sovereignty by sharing a currency. Scotalnd would still have control over fiscal policy which they dont at present heres Alisdair admitting a currency union in the event...

Re: You take the high road...

This isn't the view of the UK Treasury (unsurprisingly) , they've already published a paper recommending that the UK doesn't enter into a currency union with an independent Scotland. The following is my synopsis of the UK Treasury position (rather than my own assertions) Scotland could continue to ...

Re: You take the high road...

No offense taken ( not much anyway) but simply by making the point the inference is that Scotland would NOT be able to stand on its own feet. On sterling - the pound sterling is no more english than scottish - it "belongs" to the united kingdom So if the uk as constituted breaks up then presumeably ...

immutable has a clear definition (permanency ;inflexibility-among others) i'm puzzled by your idea it is a "rhetorical" device absolutely The United States of America would an obvious example of a nation created where one did not exist before. But the United Kingdom is more like the USSR i would ar...

Re: You take the high road...

immutable might be too strong but i would argue that nations are more permanent than "historical accidents"- hence the survival of Scotland as an idea despite the attempt of some at the time of the Union to rebrand it as North Britain. i do concede and hope you agree that constructs like the USSR, t...

Re: You take the high road...

It is a fascinating question - to what extent can groups within a democracy decide the whole thing isn't for them and just go their own way... and the structures of law and convention, and the power of the status quo that stop this happening. There might, for example, be American states that would ...

Re: You take the high road...

No it isnt In the unlikely event a Unionist party ever gained enough support in scotland to attempt to re negotiate re entry to the Union then that is presumeably what would happen. Your post is simply part of the same old " they want to have their cake and eat it" nonsensical argument. Personally I...

Re: You take the high road...

And the point is? I wasnt around at the time but I dont remember reading anywhere that the scots or english people for that matter had any say in whether to join in union in the first place If the scottish electorate continue to vote snp in large numbers then of course independence will remain on th...

Re: You take the high road...

However the vote goes and I personally think it will be a lot closer than most think, this referendum is just another step on the road however long to the break up of the Union. Britain has had its day. It was always a creation based on the mutual benefits inherent in the accumulation of an empire a...

I don't need to point anything out or do anything to change what has happened because I agree with what has happened. You are the one who thinks that there is a massive wrong, I don't give a flying toss what you think. The question is, what are you going to do about your grievance with the state.[/q...

So due process and rule of law completely unnecessary then? Why not just shoot suspected wrongdoers then? Happy with that? Yes ?.. and if you were "seeing" an armed response coppers missus on the side and he found out That's a ridiculous statement. Is it  unlike the claim that suicide bombers...
