Re: The Politics Thread

Laura Pidcock, who was booted out of her North West Durham Seat earlier this month, said 'Blair's legacy still hangs around this party like a millstone'. Just don't get it these left whingers do they? :conf: Gravey train left without you love? As @teaforpterasaur put it in Twitter: "You lost your s...

Re: The Politics Thread

On the whole centrist or not for next Labour Leader, a recent poll asked voters which potential leaders a) they had heard of and b) would prefer to be the next leader. Ranked in order of preference for new leader: Starmer (3rd most heard of) Phillips (joint 5th most heard of) Cooper (most heard of) ...

Re: Diving Arsenal Players - The Least Shocking Admission Ever

I think Ancelotti made the most sense, surprised they didn't go for him, and surprised he went to Everton. That said I think Arteta will be a good appointment, if he's given time. Everything I read about him looks promising, he speaks well, he has learned from the very best. But they don't have the ...

Thank you for fact checking "half a trillion a day".

Re: General Chit Chat

You, broke: Venice is overpriced. Me, woke: given it is visited daily by half a trillion tourists, Venice is clearly massively underpriced. I'm not in any rush to go back, even in March it was catastrophically busy. It's a day-trip destination, not a full holiday. That said, there's nowhere else rem...

Sajid Javid isn't Muslim so no he probably doesn't :D.

His parents are Muslim but he says he isn't. Up the apostates.

Re: The Politics Thread

His vote share only went up 12% despite being unopposed! Think you may be right, Chorley elected an MP of the winning party from 1964-2010. Wouldn't have been surprised for it to be another Tory gain this time around if they'd stood though I think Hoyle is quite popular personally locally (outside m...

Re: A very Posh affair, hope it keeps fine for it. Versus Peterborough away 14-12-2019

Nah, not when he's playing on midfield anyway, a libero is essentially a sweeper, plays behind the back line, Sammer or Matthaus like. Bridders when he plays in midfield still plays in front of the back line. He's not a regista, not mobile or high enough. I don't like American football, but I stand ...

Re: The Politics Thread

It's almost a shame Hoyle is Speaker, he looks like a good Labour leader to me. Don't see him appealing much to the South or city seats that Corbyn has done well in. Labour need someone who does both - not just one thing. Hang on. Weren't the vast majority of Labour's lost seats in the North? Aye, ...

Re: The Politics Thread

Certainly, but picking a competent leader is the sine qua non. I think you're wrong about Starmer personally, I think he's a very competent leader, and a good communicator and a man of substance. I think he'd be a much better leader than Ed M (who I liked but was a bit "wet"). Think he's been hamstr...

:D it's a metaphor!

Though the holding midfielder playing that role does sort of sit between where a half-back and (old style) full back would go and I assume that is where the name in American Football comes from (in the same way you still have halves in both codes of Rugby).

Re: The Politics Thread

I don't think it's anywhere near as much "appeals in the North and South" as "doesn't massively put off one group of people". Think it's overly simplistic to treat "the North" as a homogenous mass and despair to read the outriders have decided that Corbynisms failure was "not racist enough" and they...

I'm not sure it really counts as an Americanism at all if there is no concise way of saying it in British English, but hey ho, I'm like totally fine with it.

Cheers DSB much appreciated. As noted, once a ball is moving notional formations are often little more than starting points. From what I've seen of Bridcutt in a white shirt he plays that holding role as a quarterback dropping v deep to pick it up off the centre backs. V little difference then betw...

Well that's your answer to that. Turns out plenty of folk took the whole "feck off and join the Tories" literally. Looking forward to finding out how that isn't their fault.

Re: Goal of the decade

 similar thing in the League Cup final in Cardiff. 2-0 down inside 10 mins, going to shit. SKD picks it up on the right wing, steps inside and spaffs a trundling shot at goal. Guy in front of us "F*ck off Davies you useless...YEEEEEEEEEES".
