You either like a piece of music or you don't. Once you start claiming that someone is 'influential' or 'important' you've arrived at pseuds corner.   doesnt mean you cant debate it though, people have preferences, and ideas of what is important or influential, and as long as the...

Commie makes a good point. It seems to me that section whatever of your public order act may go a little far in the suppression of free speech. I have no sympathy for scientologists (I consider them on the looney side), but their belief is really no less firmly based than other beliefs (none of whi...

RHCP definitely have lasted long than Nirvana because they replaced/swapped their deceased/hooked members when heroin called time. What an odd thing to say. that was why i was whistling awkwardly  nirvana would have a tricky time to still be going. that said all the best chili's stuff in m...

im not a massive beatles fan, i am a massive ramones fan but i hope that doesnt cloud my judgement too far. that said i by no means dislike the Beatles, and i think they have been massively infuential. however, i think they are the single most overrated band in history. thats not so much because the...

i dont go in for all the hysteria that says a kid watches a violent film, or plays a violent game and as a direct result goes and kills somebody, but the constant glamourisation of guns and violence has to have an effect. views ? Hows about you start another thread on that? Shame to spoil a good mu...

Can't really count sales as influence though Worthy, lest folk say SClub7 or somesuch shite are, er, worthy. (And I speak as a Beatles fan.) Very true indeed. As mentioned earlier in the thread, kids have money and represent a fair percentage of the record buying public. Mainstream pop ( and not ju...

or the MC5 or the New York Dolls (sadly destroyed by that tossrag Malcolm McClaren!!) I was forunate enough, a few years ago, to meet Glen Matlock up in Glasgow. Lovely bloke, he gave me a signed copy of his autobiography I Was a Teenage Sex Pistol . Basically Matlock was clasically trained and was...

the Chilis have kept the ability to create new and interesting ideas. Think so? Really? Frusciante provokes some beautiful harmonies but I'm so bored of that rackety funk thing they do - I'm sure I've heard the verse to By The Way on a dozen albums of theirs... i think stadium arcadium is there bes...

Just a comment on "aggressive music": Not sure why music has to be regarded as such, or that it's the only way to go. An instance I heard on here (and not having a go at anybody) but a line "You used to get it in fishnets, now you get it in a nightdress" seems (to me) a bit "giggles behind the hand...

my point regarding the Ramones was that their influence is often massivly underestimated. They were the canvas on which all down stroke based aggressive music is erm...painted? killed by an analogy Right, if this makes any sense then you're a better man than I, Gunga Din, but here goes: I think tha...

my friend from uni was lucky enough to be in washington and get a ticket to see the 30 year anniversary tour of Inflamable Material. i was sooooo jealous, apparently they were amazing, and he couldnt hear for three days afterwards. The same tour they played the Town Hall, first time ever in Bolton....

There is no way the Ramones were more influential than the Beatles. they gave birth to the punk scene and all the deviants from it. Correct, but then there's a school that'll tell you that The Ramones took their lead from The Kinks early stuff. or the MC5 or the New York Dolls (sadly destroyed by t...

I can't understand the rationale behind complaints about speed cameras. In fact - at least in this country - I laugh at those who object to them even when they are signposted. How dumb can you be getting snapped by a camera with a sign announcing its presence? All I can guess is that there are far ...

I hate Punk. I hate the Ramones for being Punk's biggest influence. The greatest artist (musical or other) of the 20th century was Miles Davis, in my opinion. What you know as 'Emo' isn't really 'Emo' music. Black Sabbath were the most influential 'heavy' band, for my money. an opinion you are enti...

Oh, and around 1980 I remember running all the way home from Eagley CC because BBC 2 were running a thing about Irish bands. On that particular night my all-time heroes, SLF, were sharing the stage with some unheard of bunch of Dubliners called U2. slightly off topic of supporting bands, my friend ...
