Re: Should I(E) stay or should I(E) go?
I'm not really tied to a particular formation, it's sort of why Managers exist. 352, 433, 442 which ever one gets us up. Most "formations" are meaningless now. Almost all teams play different shapes based on where the ball is at the time and players are expected to know. Very little static stuff on...

Re: Should I(E) stay or should I(E) go?
Specifically I’d say a 4231! Meh, numbers. Players have roles. The numbers don't really matter. If we switch to whatever your preferred system is who do YOU rely on being able to win League One next season? I'm not setting a trap, just wondering how many first 11 players you feel we'd need to top t...

Re: Tooling up: The summer 2024 transfer thread
Sounds more like Moulden has ties to Bolton so 2+2=4, thereby we're interested. Same maths would give Bogdan a chance of signing for us given he's been watching our play off final. If Nicko is just pulling strings, fine. We need better players in parts of the 11, but we also need to be more robust ...

Re: Should I(E) stay or should I(E) go?
There are fewer wing backs - they are highly specialised roles and I think the quality we need in those positions to specifically make this system work is exceptionally high. You are looking for players with everything in their game. I don’t think it’s the same for example at centre half in a norma...

Re: Rising in Wembley's Glow: A Bolton Wanderers Tale - Bolton vs Oxford. 18th May 2024, 4.15pm
I don't doubt the veracity of that. It's often least loss of bottle takes the booty. I'm not suggesting 20 new players nor that pressure gets to players. As ever we head to the extremes to try and land a point. But you do need sufficient on your half of the pitch to get the right outcome. If I look...

Re: Should I(E) stay or should I(E) go?
Not for me. I think the changes needed to make ‘tweaks’ would be too expensive. If Sharon has the money to get top quality wing backs then we can maybe do that but I’m not seeing it likely. Is that true of any player we need in when we attach the words "top quality" to them? Two "top quality" centr...

Re: Should I(E) stay or should I(E) go?
I’d be reluctant too but I’d also make sure they have protection in front. Players to help head and kick it when necessary to take the pressure off the centre backs. Johnston reads the game better than anyone we’ve got and I think if you say to him and Toal you are here to head it, kick it and keep...

Re: Rising in Wembley's Glow: A Bolton Wanderers Tale - Bolton vs Oxford. 18th May 2024, 4.15pm
It is for me. Ability includes the ability not to underperform so often. The most worrying thing from where I'm sat, is if it's just one player, that happens occasionally and we deal with it. When it's most of the team on the same day, there just aren't enough subs on the bench. Most footballers ar...

Re: Should I(E) stay or should I(E) go?
Worth noting that before we switched to a 3 some on here wanted Johnston out of the club, because he was "never a defender" in a back 4. That is absolutely not snark, by the way - but I think we'd have to assume that a Johnston coming back off a full year out and coming into a back four is unlikely ...

Re: Should I(E) stay or should I(E) go?
I'm sure Saturday has had a massive impact. So it should, probably our most important game in 7 years. I mean we could wait to July to see if it sways back, some, but this isn't a minority of not reets. July won't do anything much. Only performances and results will shift it now and only promotion ...

Re: Should I(E) stay or should I(E) go?
Simple question for those who are (understandably) asking for a back four: who's your one central striker, in either the 4-3-3 or the 4-2-3-1? If it's Charles, and let's be honest he's easily our best source of goals, how does that help the total lack of 'stickability' we saw on Saturday? If it's n...

Re: Should I(E) stay or should I(E) go?
^^ I think for me, Bertie, if he's going to go, either under his own steam or otherwise, we just need it to occur quickly. We've been told plenty that a minority or just a few not rights want him gone, but this little survey (obviously not statistically representative) suggests there might be a few...

Re: Rising in Wembley's Glow: A Bolton Wanderers Tale - Bolton vs Oxford. 18th May 2024, 4.15pm
So any manager who sets us up to concede 5 goals in 10 games and to have the sort of structure they showed in the run in will I think have more joy here. I have no issue with that. You can play differently to how we do and still have the same basic principles in place. The new manager doesn't have ...

Re: Rising in Wembley's Glow: A Bolton Wanderers Tale - Bolton vs Oxford. 18th May 2024, 4.15pm
Oxford's manager doesn't think he changed a huge amount tactically. He tweaked their midfield set up, but has said their approach didn't change vastly since they lost to us and he's right. He's certainly not a "building a whole club in my image" manager - he's a coach that slotted into an existing s...

Re: Rising in Wembley's Glow: A Bolton Wanderers Tale - Bolton vs Oxford. 18th May 2024, 4.15pm
You can say whatever you like but Oxford set up perfectly for that final. They didn’t come to be ‘pretty’. There was no nonsense. No ‘we have to play a high line and roll the ball around’. Whatever anyone says or whatever picture they paint - Oxford had that in their locker in spades. Same in the s...

Re: Rising in Wembley's Glow: A Bolton Wanderers Tale - Bolton vs Oxford. 18th May 2024, 4.15pm
The ‘improved us every season’ line is exploded by looking at the places that Derby, Portsmouth and Oxford finished last season. All below us. Oxford 19th. All have gone way past us now. Oxford had a bad season, but stuck to the same plan they've been working to for a while and didn't panic. They n...

Re: Rising in Wembley's Glow: A Bolton Wanderers Tale - Bolton vs Oxford. 18th May 2024, 4.15pm
Days after being beaten (again) in a local derby and the day before a crucial fixture against a then promotion rival: "I've haven't enjoyed this week... it's taken an awful lot out of me" and "I'll reset in the summer and think about what happens in the future". A sure fire way to rally the troops....

Re: Tooling up: The summer 2024 transfer thread
https://twitter.com/burndenway/status/1792136365510975907 Saw that. Hard to know if that means Baxter wants out or we've identified a better #2 as vital. When Baxter arrived it was clear his fitness would be pivotal for us. If a young lad with real ability will come in and be #2 fantastic. I've not...

Re: Should I(E) stay or should I(E) go?
Agree with this mate. We have the "kernel" in some respects, but whilst (for example) we point the Sheehan's ability (he's masterful under minimal pressure) no one's going to argue much, I wouldn't have thought, with their midfield being head and shoulders above ours, yesterday. I think Josh has wo...
