Re: We are (hopefully) staying up: the opposition

This is, for me, one of the most interesting aspects of Bolton as a club. We are a decent club, with a lot of history, in a huge town (I think we're the largest non-city in the UK, but can stand correction on that score); but we don't get the gates you'd expect. My view has been, for some time, that...

Re: Release or retain?

I rate Zach, but he's at that stage in his career where he can't rely on being "the kid" and needs to prove himself in training and matches like any other senior pro. Plenty of players struggle when they go from being a bit coddled to having real demands placed on them. I think he showed plenty when...

Re: Release or retain?

I think it's a player by player thing. You could as easily say that a player dropped by a big club might feel he has something to prove. I don't actually think it's that simple, as you're always dealing with individuals and you have to make a call on an individual basis. If we are looking to build ...

Re: We are (hopefully) staying up: the opposition

with Eddie having written off most of the debt and us having paid off more, we are more likely to be able to get agreement on refinancing for the loans or facilities we have left as long term repayment looks increasingly viable and creditors are less likely to panic. Interesting, this. I'm not argu...

Re: We are (hopefully) staying up: the opposition

They are desperate for promotion. Warnock essentially handed them a list of demands and said, "If I don't get these we might not get there." They'd probably have handed him more, given how well he has been doing with them this season.

Re: Release or retain?

Everton have a few youth players who look to have potential, but haven't necessarily progressed in the last year or two. A loan from them would probably benefit the squad. However, what I am trying to look at is transfers in the light of Ken's comments about wanting to change the transfer policy to ...

Re: We are (hopefully) staying up: the opposition

I didn't mean it harshly. I live in the area (West Yorkshire) and Bradford fans felt like he should have stayed and taken them up. Most have come around to the idea now that it was an upward move for him, but at the time a lot of their fans saw him as going sideways due to our finances. I agree thi...

I'd be very happy if we could recruit Flanagan, Burke and Robinson to the squad next season. They could all have potential profit in them, particularly the first two
Wouldn't Burke and Robinson command fees?

Re: Release or retain?

On another note, have we had any indication of whether the club intend to try and bring Flanagan in on a free in the summer, or whether he's regarded as out of our range? Given his injury record and assault conviction, you'd think a number of clubs would avoid him. What makes you think anybody can ...

Re: Release or retain?

Then I'm not sure where the issue was with my first comment on here, when I said I'd keep him on a one year deal if he'd take one. I said then that the reason I didn't vote for him was because I'm assuming he'd want a slightly longer deal and some guarantees as to his playing time - which I don't th...

Re: Release or retain?

Karl offers us a lot in front of the back 4 (or 5, depending) - but he's 35 and I'd only offer him new terms if it's a deal that assumes him having a gradually reducing role over time. If he were 25 I'd be shouting "sign him up!", but unless he's the Midlands version of Gary Speed he will decline o...

Re: We are (hopefully) staying up: the opposition

If your manager is doing a decent job then he'll get linked to available gigs. Parky is a doing well to keep us above the drop zone, so he's bound to be considered if the likes of Reading need a manager. Managers don't usually do loyalty. This isn't Parky's dream job and Reading are, at the minute, ...

Re: Release or retain?

I've left Alnwick out purely on the assumption we can find a better option in the summer market Are you on actual drugs? Nope. If the club don't have viable targets from the available Bosmans then they can offer him a new deal as needed. He's unlikely to be inundated with huge contract offers befor...

Re: The Promotion Commotion Transfer Thread 2017

I agree, just like understanding how to make good runs and where to stand in the penalty area can make you special - but they're not fashionable and they don't necessarily get fans excited about players. Stelios was the same. He was a Premier League player because of his footballing brain, rather t...

Re: Release or retain?

I want to see us push up the table, not scrap at the bottom again. We'll need a better keeper than we currently have on the books if we want to do that. All things being equal, I'd say a few positions need filling before we look at goalkeepers. Alnwick has kept us in things more times than a few, a...
