Re: The Great Art Debate

I agree. So, the main difference between us on the gallery point is that I am sure it will diminish non-photographers' experience of viewing pictures, and you are not. If they had photography days and non-photography days, that would be great and we could all make our choices about when we'd rather...

Re: The Great Art Debate

who are you or I or Jon to make that kind of judgement on how other people should approach or experience art and conclude that they should be subject to some kind of a ban? Just out of interest, would you feel the same at the theatre or the opera? interesting comparison... leaving aside the technic...

I knew you'd be trouble. seriously, though - no tripods, no flash and measures to stop people obscuring other peoples' view... why does it bother you if someone sees an ace picture and wants to share their excitement with a friend? it's not summat I'd do myself - you can't do a painting justice wit...

Re: The Politics Thread

Ok, so let's state the principle then - if a state suffers a handful of civilian deaths a year because its technoligical security dome is 99.9% effective but not perfect, it has to tolerate those deaths if any action against the perpetrators would necessarily cost more civilian lives than it saves....

Re: The Politics Thread

I'm fascinated hoboh. Israel basically has a defence shield that negates 99.9% of the Hamas rockets. On the other hand, Israel has the kind of capability that only leaves the fillings from your teeth. Now, bearing that in mind, do you believe it a commensurate response to use the nuclear option aga...

Energy security is obviously a 'big deal' in world affairs, but, like Pru, I do wonder where the directing mind is. I mean, going to war to secure access to oil might well be very sensible utilitarian long-term thinking, but I don't see how it would advance the short-term reputational and electoral...

Re: The Politics Thread

Why would losing a PR battle matter anyway? Because if you value your international standing then you'll do things to protect it. If, instead, you decide that 'the whole world's against us', then you have nothing to lose reputationally. I don't think the whole world is against them. And I don't thi...
