Police raid football clubs

There ARE other teams(we'd have no-one to play otherwise) and here's where all-comers can discuss the wider world of football......

Newcastle United is believed to be one of the clubs raided but the other clubs involved have yet to be named.

The operation is not connected to Lord Stevens' ongoing Quest inquiry into the Premiership and was "totally independent", police said.

Search warrants were executed on the club premises and two homes between 0730 and 0900 BST.

A police spokesman said: "We can confirm that search warrants were served at three football clubs and the homes of two individuals in connection with corruption in football and its impact on owners and shareholders."

A Northumbria Police spokesman said they were aware that "an operation" had been carried out by their London colleagues at St James' Park, the home of Newcastle United.

Weren't we conducting our own inquiry and giving any evidence to the football authorities? Maybe Gartside is bitter.

Second club rumoured to be Glasgow Rangers. Do you see a pattern emerging?

If only the third club was Blackburn Rovers then we could possibly look forward to the sight of a very deserving Scottish manager being banged up for 23 hours a day with Big Delroy! :P

Rangers, Newcastle and Portsmouth according to sky sports news. Maybe now we can be proved innocent once and for all?

According to 5Live, the third club is NOT Rangers. City of London Police are acting on information passed to them by the Quest enquiry which dealt with Premier League clubs. They are not neccessarily investigating the clubs but individuals at those clubs.

Interesting then that the BBC online says it's "believed to be" Rangers and is still quoting the CoL police statement saying that actions were "totally independent" of the endless Quest...? :conf:

Newcastle United issued a statement confirming the club was visited by police.

"The club itself is not the subject of the investigation," it said. (BBC)

Allardyce. Please. Would be so funny.

Which is a funny comment to make as I listened to the headlines on 5live at 6 and they said that 3 clubs were raided, Rangers, Portsmouth and Newcastle.

Not sure where you got this business about them saying that Rangers were not the third club, unless it was an interview with Mihir Bose at about 5.15 where he was saying that Rangers weren't involved in the Quest enquiry because they are Scottish but he just meant that the Quest investigation only looked at English clubs.

Strathclyde police have confirmed that Rangers ARE one of the clubs involved!
