Tonight's Football

There ARE other teams(we'd have no-one to play otherwise) and here's where all-comers can discuss the wider world of football......

City-Chelsea game was superb. A real cup game and full credit to the ref for ignoring the divers and whiners and letting it be a real physical affair. City deserved to win but Aguero would have been off for me. That two footer on Ruis was utterly cynical. Really enjoyed it.

That was a pure assault that, wasn't it? Dunno about the hand-wringers at the FA doing anything about it - it's about time the Police got involved.

And yes, I'm quite serious. Why shouldn't they?

Agree it deserves punishment absolutely. Think we have to be very careful about allowing the coppers in. Where does that start and stop?

Well, I'd use this as a start. There was absolutely no case for the player attempting to play the ball as it was nowhere near. See also Keane on Haaland and Barrow on Came (though I doubt that there's any film footage of that one - though come to think of it, Barrow on anyone, the curly-haired, talent-free, violent 4ucknugget).

Aye, could see a case for them, but the problem is the where does it stop bit, rather than the where does it start. I think about some the the Arsenal fans - they'd have the coppers involved because someone had a firm grip during the handshakes.

You start of with the clear cut ones, but then it starts to get blurred fairly quickly.

Schumacher on Battiston?
Zidane on Matterasi?
Fellaini on Shawcross?
Shawcross on Ramsey?

I dunno - think there's potentially a thin end to a very thick wedge.

you'd just start punching him till he fights you back. even if it takes ten minutes of punching him before he does.

better 10 v 10 than 11(minus yr best player plus a crappy reserve) versus their full 11 .

its what kevin keegan and billy bremner used to do.

and its what paul robinson/ kevin davies/ whoever shoulda done to Shit Ronaldo when he dived to win that penalty..

Police got involved when Bowyer and Dyer were windmilling eachother. Everybody said it was the right thing to do, then. The same people probably wouldn't be too impressed if 46 pro rugby players got collared for it though.

The Aguerro assault was definitely a red carder, but it wasn't worth a criminal investigation. It was a deliberate two footer - no doubt, or at least beyond a reasonable doubt, but it was aimed at the blokes arse - he was never going to break anything, hardly GBH. {edit: it wasn't anything like that mortal attack on Van Persie for instance}

See and this is where the difficulty lies. What do the police get involved in, and what don't they? Do they only do "off the ball incidents" so as to remain "outside of the sport" as a whole or do they have to decide whether a mis-timed tackle that broke someone's leg had intent or not?

And what about mis-timed challenges that someone hurdles and is uninjured from but is worse than the one that actually did end someone's career?

It's a bit of a minefield to say the least.

And could a mis-timed tackle be GBH/ABH or would it have to show intent? And how would the police decide between one and the other, given the huge number of incidents every week up and down the football league?

For me what's really needed is proper use of technology and a proper review of decisions. Yesterday it would have taken 10 seconds for a video official to see the replay and tell the ref that Aguero needs to go.

End of the day he'll get a ban now, but that doesn't help Chelsea, nor does it change the outcome of the game or really punish Man City that much, or the player in reality.....

Right, so if I did that to you if you were say, laying on your sofa, I could offer this little lot up in my defence and expect to get away with it, could I?

No. If I was lying on my sofa you'd have had to break in to double kick my arse. If however we were in a pub and one of us had said something nasty about the other of us's political idols (f'rinstance) and a poxy little fight had broken out and the worst that occurred in that fight was to have a big lump the size of a small planet* land two footed on my arse, then I think I'd be well over the top to call the rozzers in, even if my arse was stinging quite a bit the next day.
If though, during that little boxing match you'd have smashed a bottle in my face or deliberately tried to break my leg, well then I'd have welcomed the bizzies with open arms and all sorts of book throwing could have occurred.
Not, note, that either one of us would stoop so low in the first place to get into any arguments because unlike Aguero we are a) gentlemen, b) not Argentinian, and c) wouldn't be acrobatic enough to manage a double booted arsekick with pike and still remain on our feet afterwards.

* in comparison to my svelte self of course.

Aguero not to face disciplinary action, so says the BBC ticker

I've not seen the incident yet, but will seek it out. How bad was it?
