Re: Liverpool laughing stocks?
His performance in Liverpool's Champion's League final where, swan dive aside, he was fantastic, and the year later in the FA Cup final against West Ham put paid to any ideas he 'didn't do it in the big games'. He's nearly always performed in the big games for Liverpool.
It's harder to do an international level, mainly because there are fewer big games, but two goals at World Cups, scored the goal that sealed qualification. He hasn't been amazing for England at major tournaments but he's always tended to be one of the better ones.

Re: Liverpool laughing stocks?
it's being whispered quietly that (behind Rooney) Gary Cahill (and Hart) are early frontrunners to be next the Cap'n Engerrland...
Re: Liverpool laughing stocks?
Can't see many alternatives mesen. Don't like keeper-captains myself, so would be Gaz as VC (and Captain for the half of games Rooney is suspended).

Sums it up nicely for me.BWFC_Insane wrote: The man shouldn't captain a bag of piss let alone the England side.
Re: Liverpool laughing stocks?
He wouldn't be my choice, but I think it's nailed on he'll get it so no point worrying about it.
I think that's a little harsh though tbf. I think he's well-respected by the other players, seems to handle the media stuff much better than he did, and he's also 'clever' in football terms. Thick as f*ck in real life so, but I'm not sure that's that important. I also think there's an element of hope that he'll raise his game if he's the undoubted 'main man' like he did for United last year.
Still a long way from being a 'good' choice IMO, but I don't think he's the worst possible choice either. Aren't many stand-out options.
EDIT: The other point to consider is that he is the 'obvious' choice. Is it worth pissing him off to give it somebody else uninspiring? I mean if there's a Bobby Moore out there, or a Bryan Robson, sure, but I don't think there is.

Help. The Debt in Suarez thread, now Rooney in Liverpool thread. The World's falling apart at the seams, and no wonder when the threads are unravelled.

that may well be - but it's not really the same question as to who actually will be named captain, is it?

If the question is who should be England captain then the answer is 'anyone but Rooney' IMHO....thebish wrote:BWFC_Insane wrote:What qualities does Rooney have to qualify him as captain?Prufrock wrote:Can't see many alternatives mesen. Re: Liverpool laughing stocks?
fecking hell!!
A minutes silence for the 96 Hillsborough victims.
Sportsmail's Dominic King in Boston: This may be pre-season but memories of the darkest day in Liverpool’s history are never far away and a minute’s silence has just been held for the supporters who perished at Hillsborough on April 15, 1989.
Liverpool’s current owners, Fenway Sports Group, wanted to mark the anniversary by paying their own tribute and Kenny Dalglish came on to the field to release 96 red balloons in memory of those who lost their lives.

↑↑↑ it never ceases. Any request is accepted for fear of being hounded if it's denied.
Meanwhile, King Kenny .... only 3 more balloons and Nena could have sung you on.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

I will buy no more Nena records, until she does a more sensitive re-release of 96 red ballons.bobo the clown wrote:↑↑↑ it never ceases. Any request is accepted for fear of being hounded if it's denied.

And shaves her pits.
Boycott Nena, Now!
I think that could be a really puncy hashtag...

That one will no doubt pale into insignificance, compared to the 96th anniversary!! Still. We won't be around for that one either, thank goodness.Abdoulaye's Twin wrote:Thankfully we wont be around for the 100th anniversary of Hillsborough!thebish wrote:bleeeuuuurgghhhhh!!!Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has placed a special You'll Never Walk Alone wreath at the 9/11 memorial site in New York during the club's pre-season tour.
