Crystal Palace 3-3 Liverpool

The full-time whistle goes and Liverpool players slump to their knees. Luis Suarez is crying his eyes out and Steven Gerrard ushers the television cameras away.

Re: Tonight's Football
Why don't Bolton follow the Liverpool example and just keep numbers forwards when winning? It's all this defensive football that let's teams back in............oh.........

no need for bitterness - just enjoy the moment - we've had precious little to cheer about!BWFC_Insane wrote:Why don't Bolton follow the Liverpool example and just keep numbers forwards when winning? It's all this defensive football that let's teams back in............oh.........

Re: Tonight's Football
I didn't watch the match but surely Liverpool weren't going for a massive win to try and reduce Citeh's goal difference?
That would be pretty silly (with hindsight fecking stupid).

Glorious! City better not feck this up. Go out and smash Villa in the first half hour please.
Also, I think Robbie Fowler might be the worst of them all!

I can't bring myself to celebrate this until it's in the bag.
Oh go on then - just a little one.

Draw by attacking, or draw by defending... Same outcome. It's just that one is better to watch they another.BWFC_Insane wrote:Why don't Bolton follow the Liverpool example and just keep numbers forwards when winning? It's all this defensive football that let's teams back in............oh.........

Re: Tonight's Football
I don't think Liverpool's collapse was better to watch than any other, in fact they way they pissed it away must have been absolutely soul destroying for their fans. In the same was as it was for us when we pissed away a 2 goal lead in the last 15 against West Brom that essentially cost us our premiership place. It was reckless and stupid.boltonboris wrote:Draw by attacking, or draw by defending... Same outcome. I remember us giving away plenty of leads under Allardyce early doors, but eventually he got us sorted.
For me there is a way to see out games. As Neville and Carragher called it "game management". It isn't being pretty and committing lots forwards. It's what we did under Allardyce, slow the game down, get the ball in the corners, keep plenty back and when they have it drop off and defend your box, rinse and repeat. Sure there are times when it doesn't work but that is football sometimes teams will score no matter what.
When I look at us on Saturday I think we pretty much got it right, except for, I'd argue, the more cynical game management side. When we broke we could have got the ball in the corners, wasted time, slowed the game down and stopped them from getting out easily. Tried to play slower and take their momentum away.
As it is we went end to end and basically if we didn't stick away one of our 3 great chances on the break, chances are they'd get one. Which I guess for a neutral was an exciting watch but wasn't really conducive to managing the game and seeing it out.

↑↑↑↑ So, by attacking we created "three great chances" ... and they were great chances too. But you'd have preferred we had taken the ball into the corner and wasted time rather than try to score from them. Really ???
No hindsight being employed there then. As i said before I really do think you sit there dreaming up contrary things to say just for the sake of it.
Honestly, I give up on you.

Re: Tonight's Football
Well, it worked for us under Allardyce. I think the trouble with letting the game go end to end is that you risk missing a chance or two and giving the opposition more momentum and encouragement. Especially when you haven't got lets say the greatest strikers in the world. Had we slowed the game down more on Saturday and been more cynical would Brum have scored? Possibly but I feel it would have been a bit tougher for them.bobo the clown wrote:↑↑↑↑ So, by attacking we created "three great chances" ... and they were great chances too. In terms of sitting deep and playing on the break, if that is what you're going to do we did it nigh on perfectly but for missing the chances. If we have a more consistent goalscorer next season that tactic may be golden, especially with Kellet's pace for example.
But I still think how Allardyce tended to set up to kill the games off is more reliable and once the team was drilled into it, they were pretty good at hanging onto leads when they had to.

Joofy and Campo used to do this brilliantly for us. Campo by milking the world's most dramatic foul and Joofy running the ball into one of their corners. Generally, it seemed to work pretty well.

Problem is, we often try to see games out from a few minutes in. Certainly, we often try to see out a game from half time. It's one thing doing it with a few minutes to go, but doing it with 20 plus in a meaningless game...
