Tonight's Football

There ARE other teams(we'd have no-one to play otherwise) and here's where all-comers can discuss the wider world of football......

In the end we were just outplayed by a far superior side. Not sure there is much you can do.

I will keep saying it, but if we want to go that step further we need a far better centre midfield than Rice and Mainoo. Neither are remotely close to good enough. And tonight has just shown it. Spain won it there.

You can't give Spain their half of the pitch and play 'em in ours.

Mainoo looked like he’d won a competition tonight. Miles off it. And Kanes injured, or finished. Threatened briefly when we got it back to 11 v 11 with the subs but overall the gap was bigger than two goals. Finishing second probably flattered us…

I think Mainoo has generally been decent. You can't press 11 with 7. Stand out for me has probably been Gheui...or however

Think we were good enough to win it but tactically poor. We let Spain have way too much of the ball thinking we could ride our luck defensively.

Spain were the better side. Our ability to sit back and see them out just went against us.

I'm sick of the sight of Kane this tournament. No doubt he's a great striker but there's been time and time again that he wasn't playing well. Spectators could've offered more than that effort from Kane. He should be ashamed of himself. To look back and think about what he offered today he should be disgusted. All he did was jog. Disgraceful. Southgates fault for letting him play when he's this out of form.

Palmer was outstanding this entire tournament. We let Spain have it. They went out to excite and attack and we went out there to defend.

They'll look back and regret tonight. We don't win games by going to defend.

Thanks Southgate. England's nearly man. Much love for what he's done, but it's the same way we've gone out against Croatia, Italy and Spain.

Attack.

Best team won. Unlike previous tournaments we didn't lose to the first strong side we played but barely did ourselves justice both tonight and over the whole tournament.

Disappointing but not wholly unexpected.

Felt like we only saw England when we played the Dutch. Every other match we've looked a poor side.

Some of this is true. Kane was worse than useless. He was lazy. Shouldn’t have played, barely moved. And that didn’t help.

But the midfield were where Spain did us. We couldn’t get near theirs. Mainoo is absolutely way below the standard needed, as is rice and Bellingham has been, overhead kick aside, a massive let down.

I don’t think tonight you could just press the attack button against Spain they are too good. But we couldn’t keep possession well enough or win it back because our players in that key area weren’t good enough. And aren’t good enough.

We played the first 60mins with 10 men, I told you Kane should never have played. Foden didn't have a good game and we were sloppy at the back when in possession.
Still, we made the final, now on to Tuesday and hopefully the women do the job.

Run at an English player and shout " boo" and they'll panic and give you the ball. Doris Day made a record called "Bewitched, bothered and bewildered" It not only described us, but we played like her. She was also right with "Que Sera, Sera" (What will be will be)...and thus it turned out. Back to the drawing board.

We did lose out in midfield. I'm not sure we can single them out though. The outballs we had were to Saka who didn't really try and run past Cucurella. It seemed tentative.

Our players very much looked to sit back and let them have it. Defending with people running at you isn't easy especially at Spains level. We compacted the midfield and didn't really give our team space to play in. The space we let Spain have was way too much.

There's a flow to the game. It was very much in Spains favour. Us hoofing the ball or trying to play forward to no striker is never gonna work. Midfield can't link up with a striker with no effort. Contrast that to Spain. Big difference.

Yeah Mainoo was decent in the other games. Just tonight, was either a bottlejob or he was outclassed. Guehi was spot on every game. He did let his man go for the second goal but only just!

Think Southgate ends now; we were lucky to get to the semi, then played well, but he was done tactically tonight. They knew his side and counter acted it. He needed two subs but we could have been out of it but for Pickford. Needs a change now to take this group on - possibly with a different role for Kane off the bench or whatever.

Feels like Spains started with their best players and we didn't.

I think now is the time for Sourhgate, too. Unlike a few, I'll say thanks, overall I enjoyed the trip, tournament record unsurpassed apart from Alf when I was 2.

Yeah. His record in tournaments is more or less unrivaled since 66 so huge respect. But it’s time now. I don’t believe he knows how to take the final step against the best sides.

I think it needs someone to come in and start thinking of how to play without Kane. He’s been fantastic, but he looked done for. Is Watkins good enough? Does it matter if we can make use of the likes of Foden, Bellingham, Saka and Bellingham behind? Like France in 98 with Guivarch - get your best players in the side, and Kanes not one of ours anymore.

We attack the ball, others attack the man. Foot ball allows it. Him with the hair wouldn't have lasted ten minutes in the Sunday Pub League.

Definitely echo these sentiments. It was blatantly obvious we were poorer with Kane on the pitch and yet Gareth didn't change it. Previous tournaments it seemed like Kane got knackered and struggled, can't say the same this tournament.

Can't decide whether it's lack of effort in Kanes press or tactical let them have it. Either way it offered nothing.

Better options on the bench today

He just doesn't understand how it all fits together. I'm far less annoyed tonight than Croatia or Italy. Tonight we got beaten be a v good team. But it has to be thank you and farewell now.

Kane is fine, he just needs pace around him. They had fecking Alvaro Morata up top but they had a threat. He settled on the best version of a flawed concept. He's a good egg. But despite the song, he's not the one.

Give your head a shake Pru, footballis a team game and all 11 need to muck in.
This tournament Kane has been so far off the game, he's took the p#ss out of the others.
Oh but what about his goals in the earlier games some cry out, well seriously, hardly world class were they? I mean they were so good nobody else could have scored them :?
Sorry, Kane can jog on now, the second Spanish goal he wouldn't have scored, he'd still be on the halfway line.
Bye, bye Harry, don't let the door....
Just found it a little intriguing that when Kane went off, Bellingham seemed to improve a bit from what, earlier, had been another lack lustre performance. Three at the back left us wide open on the flanks and we paid the price.
Me, I'd have gone 4 1 4 1 formation but the front one wouldn't be Kane.
