Another World Cup classic game - Sluffy's Date's gives you the day that England played probably the greatest football team there as ever been! -

1970 Mexico World Cup - England 0-1 Brazil - 7th June, 1970

England's World Cup meeting with Brazil has passed into the game's annals of legend.

Jairzinho's winning goal, Bobby Moore's masterly tackle on Pele, Jeff Astle's miss and that save from Gordon Banks marked their 1970 meeting as one of football's great matches.

England went into the game as World Cup holders. Brazil were the favourites.

It was a group match billed as the final that never was - and it lived up to its billing.

Brazil eventually swept to a third World Cup victory which won them the Jules Rimet trophy for keeps.

But England proved, in the searing 98-degree afternoon heat, that they were possibly the only team that could have stopped them.

In 1970, England had the best defence in the tournament - and they were pitted against the most potent attack.

The defence was built around Bobby Moore. Gordon Banks proved himself the world's best goalkeeper with what is hailed as the greatest save of all time, scooping Pele's downward header out and up over the bar.

The game was settled by Jairzinho, a player who scored in every round of the finals.

The late Geoff Astle missed England's best chance, firing a low shot wide with only the keeper to beat.

That is before my time, but images of Bobby Moore and Gordon Banks from this game always seem to appear on tv in world cup years.

It did look a fantastic game to watch and especially be at, I remember how sunny it was and great atmosphere there was at the game.

That Brazil team in 1970 was just unbelievable, was it the greatest team ever?

OK? Are you crazy? That was like the hardest skill to master for a goalkeeper, I should know, it took me a week to learn how to make saves like that.

Week?

Pfft, I taught him that.
