Overrated player in my opinion, but think his playstile suits the English game (although there's the Spanish striker curse...). Still a good thing for him if he leaves that hellhole that Atlético de Madrid is nowadays, plus he always scores a spoonful against us.

As far as I can see, I'm not bothered with all these millionaire idiots if they are gonna spend £27m on Torres (good player, but £27m????) and £30m on Schev. It sort of evens up the playing field when we can get Anelka for £8m doesn't it?

Torres has ability but this strikes me as a Bent-like over-inflation of his worth. Wouldn't surprise me if he's more of a Gonzalez than a Gullit.

The fee is only so high because of his release clause. We started off at £18 million plus Garcia or Cisse but because of the fan reaction (they're going to hit the roof) we had to pay full whack as it's all Atletico would accept and it would be something they had no choice in. From what I understand, if Garcia agrees to join them that fee will be £4.5 million, which takes us closer to the £22 million I was told we were sticking on.

The simple reason we're paying over the odds (and we are, of that there's no doubt) is because we've fecked up so many times in the past and seen people get away. Dani Alves, for example. We wanted to pay £8 million last summer, Sevilla wanted £12 million, and in the interim his valuation has blasted into outer space. The days of messing around with odd millions looks to be over.

I am very excited but as Batman said, lot of money to pay for someone who isn't exactly prolific.

Quick question for you, CD. Given that Benitez couldn't seem to get a tune out of Morientes, does it not leave you feeling a little nervous when he's looking to spend top dollar on an otherwise less prolific striker?

Yes.

When you bring someone into the Premiership it's always a gamble. Even when you bring someone in from the Premiership, that also can be a gamble (Pennant and Bellamy last season.) Rafa is banking on the best of Torres being brought out by playing in a much superior team to Atletico.

Morientes was a weird one. The guy is obviously class. He proved that at Real and Monaco before us, he's proving that at Valencia since leaving us. Never been able to get my head around it. He was the back to goal striker we've lacked for years, I will never be able to understand why he failed. It's not like we didn't play to his strengths - Crouch has thrived in doing what he used to do. I can only attribute his failings to be due to just not adapting to the league. It wasn't the way we played, that I do know.

This is a big gamble, make no mistake. We could however unlock his true ability, as he has failed to go on at Atletico for two seasons or so. He could be a perfect foil for Crouch. And vica versa. I am slightly worried though - our transfer record has just gone soaring past Jupiter!

Anyway, I agree with everyone here, this guy is so over rated. He is one of only two young strikers in Spain (the other being David Villa) and so the hype is immense. I just cannot help but think Liverpool are making a bad error here, I mean how much more would it take to agree a fee for Eto'o, who really is awesome?

Torres in my opinion will score about 17 league goals next season. I reckon Peter Crouch would get that many if they played him more often. A waste of money! I would value him at £17m.

the fact citeh have bid for him shows how fecked up that club is. Spunking what must be half their budget on a striker is desperation. Ok they couldn't score in a farnworth nitespot last season but a £27m striker isn't the answer. They'd be better buying 2 £9m strikers and a £8m midfielder.

You can remove 20-30% from all fees and wages this year because of the new TV money swilling around the place.

He may well turn out to be a good player. But with Owen's release clause being (apparently) £9million, there's always the thought that £25million would have bought Owen and Henry...
Now that would be a forward line.
Although Arsenal probably wouldn't sell Henry to one of their main rivals.
