That must be Villa's 20th penalty in the last 12mths.

More cheating from Gerrard to win the free kick though.

Good though it was, it was never a free kick in the first place.

I do believe that's two opening fixtures in a row Mr Gerrard has asked for and got a decision which resulted in the winning goal for his team.

Not cheating exactly but certainly not a foul.

Then in that case, if it wasn't a foul, then by appealing to the ref Gerrard WAS cheating. Again.

Though it had to be Riley didn't it.

Part and parcel of the modern game unfortunately.

That's strange - it was our first opening day win since 2002.

As for the "foul" well it wasn't. Petrov did intend to check Gerrard and got very lucky that his trailing leg won the ball but it wasn't a foul. If you want to talk about cheats, talk about Gareth Barry. That goal was in my opinion, karma for his dive.

Steven Gerrard Is A Cheat

What more does Steven Gerrard have to do to get bracketed with other 'cheats' like Ronaldo, Pires or Robben? (Be foreign? - Ed)

The penalties he won against Hungary and Sheffield United spring to mind, and the free-kick he won for his winning goal against Villa was a joke. He knew full well Petrov got a clean touch of the ball, but he stops, throws his arms up, and says to the referee "Trust me, I'm Steven Gerrard, it was a free-kick".

You don't mind losing to a fantastic strike, which it undoubtedly was, but not when the player cheated to get the opportunity.

By the way, full credit to Martin O'Neill for restraining himself in the post-match interview from saying what every Villa fan was thinking.
Tim Aylott, Villa fan, UK

...I love seeing Villa lose, but it does taint it somewhat when it's down to Gerrard cheating AGAIN.

Actually, hang on. It just makes it sweeter.

Still out of order though, and retrospective bookings need bringing in for diving asap.
Ryan, Blues fan, KRO

...Steven Gerrard is a disgrace, time and time again.

I wouldn't mind, but this is someone who has spoken out against diving and conning the ref.

Ah well, it's the Liverpool way.
Mark Hughes (not that one), Newcastle

...I never thought I'd see Alan Hansen admit that Liverpool had cheated. Credit to him.
Matty, Villa,

Predictable Liverpool
Liverpool struggle against poor opposition before Gerrard rescues them late on.

Torres looks really good but you wouldn't back him to score many in a season.

Gerrard complains to the ref that it isn't fair that he is tackled... and is awarded a free-kick.

The journos could have saved themselves some time and written their reports before the weekend...
Doddsy (A two-horse race it is then)

...I was all smiles and then...Carragher's right arm demonstrated the amazing ability to attract objects to its flight path. Then Barry converted the penalty. Then I had my head in my hands and the grim specter of working at Wal Mart tomorrow during Massachusetts' Tax Free weekend awaited me ( Unless you've worked in retail you have no idea what it's like to explain to old people what the difference between their current TVs and an HDTV is or something even remotely technical...call me craaaazy but it makes me want to replace my toes with grapes...or do something less strange)

BUT JUST IN THE NICOTINE I REFRESHED THE FOOTBALL365 MATCH COMMENTARY AND WAS TOLD OF AN INCH PERFECT GERRARD FREE KICK THAT I WOULD BE WITNESSING "LIVE" IN FIVE MINUTES!

Bless you F365 and may the Lord bless whatever sh*tty satellite slows up the feed of the match to the Fox Soccer Channel.

Thank you, again.

Nope, we drew against Sheffield United on the opening day last year, so not a winning goal at all.

Ref was supposed to be Steve Bennett wasn't it?

Nope, just makes him factually incorrect. Didn't dispute any of the rest of the content of his post, did I?
