Sevilla president Jose Maria del Nido has revealed wing-back Antonio Puerta had a heart attack in his side's game against Getafe.
Puerta is in a "very serious" condition in intensive care after collapsing in his own box after 35 minutes of Sevilla's Primera Liga opener.
The Spain international had walked off the pitch following the incident but then collapsed again in the changing rooms and was taken to the Virgen del Rocio hospital in Seville.
Del Nido says Puerta is stable but admitted the 22-year-old suffered a heart attack at the Sanchez Pizjuan during Saturday's 4-1 win over Getafe.
"He had a heart attack. He's in intensive care and is stable," Del Nido told Cadena Ser radio.
"We were scared, very scared, for the life of the player."
A 22 year old physically fit player having a heart attack. There's no hope for us middle aged, slightly over weight has-beens.
I wish him well.

Of course there is - genetic factors aside you put nothing like the strain on your heart that a professional athlete does. You'll be reet - no worries.

My ex son-in-law has had two heart transplants and a liver transplant before he was twenty eight. His brother died at twenty four from a heart problem and his other brother committed suicide in his twenties (not due probably in the least from knowing he had the same family inherited problems.) Football, or even sport in general probably had no bearing on the Sevilla player's problem. Jaidi?

What's Radhi Jaidi got to do with anything, Tango?

Of course it has nothing to do with the onset of senility....

I really hope the guy pulls through. It's always a a bitter pill to hear of someone who has become very ill at such a young age through no fault of their own self destruction.

The footage of it on youtube is really frightening.
I hope he makes a full recovery.

I echo the sentiments on here. Keeping my fingers crossed for him.

Most certainly echo al the other sentiments.
Looked not to bad for the chap walking off the pitch, however, given the scences with him being stretchered into an ambulance just got to hope its all ok.

don't say "they all look the same to you" ... the trouble you'd get into would be horrendous.

Shocking and tragic. Over here death from heart attacks amongst young athletes is not uncommon (especially in American football) - usually connected with heat in addition to extreme exertion in training rather than games. It must be even more devastating for his wife in view of the pregnancy. Our thoughts are with the family and friends.

On the plus side the lad has managed to live the dream but to die at 22 is a tragedy especially with a youngster on the way who will never know his Dad. Heartbreaking.
