Bury are to raise some much-needed revenue by staging a Monster Truck racing weekend on their Gigg Lane pitch, where the trucks will go head-to-head with the groundsman's tractor. (Bury official website)
The younger amongst you won't know this, but there was a time ... long, long ago ... (I wish I could graphic this like the Star-Wars thing - words large and passing into the distance ... mod's look into it, please) when Bury's claim to fame was the best, and I mean the very very best, playing surface in the whole of UK football.
Then they share it with Swinton RL ... and now this.
Can you imagine the playing surface after this has happened ?

If Bolton were away, somewhere like Plymouth, my mates and I would go to Gig lane with some Bury fan mates. The best thing was you could literally go anywhere in the ground once you'd paid. So if you got a bit tired bouncing up and down on the Manchester Rd. end trampoline you could go and have a sit down in the main stand.
Then they played Leeds in the FA cup in 1975 I think it was. All the Manchester teams were away, Man yoo, City, us, etc. So the place was 'heaving' as they say down there. My god what a massive scrap it turned into. Great days.

It was the League Cup in October 1974,Leeds won 2-1 in front of 16,354.
I am a bit younger and hated Bury during the 80s due to them having a better side that beat us on a regular basis.As a Bury hater i went along to their their League Cup tie against QPR in 87/88 hoping to see the top flight visitors give them a thrashing.Unfortunately Bury won 1-0.
