Sheffield United have suspended keeper Paddy Kenny for failing a drugs test.

Kenny tested positive for a banned substance, ephedrine, following last season's Championship play-off semi-final second leg against Preston.

Ephedrine is believed to be present in a cough mixture that the Republic of Ireland international is understood to have bought over the counter.

"We confirm Paddy has been suspended. This is an ongoing, confidential matter," read a club statement.

The 31-year-old could face a lengthy ban following last month's test, carried out by UK Sport - the agency responsible for drug testing programmes in sport.

The Football Association and UK Sport have so far refused to comment over the matter.

Ommmmmmmm

What's the pass mark for a drugs test - 40%? Higher?

Does he get to do resits over the summer?

Slimfast...

Ephedrine's in cough mixtures, I doubt many of its pharmacological side-effects would be much use for a goalkeeper...

I remember much mirth when learning that his pal not only ran off with Kenny's wife, but then bit a chunk out of his face.

One restaurant goer said: “The lads had clearly had a few drinks.

“One of them said he had something to tell him and muttered how he had been with his wife.

“Paddy’s face turned purple and he jumped up with a bottle and smashed it over his mate’s head. Waiters shouted at them to get out so they carried on in the street. His pal took a chunk out of Paddy’s eyebrow. There was blood all over Paddy’s shirt.”

Not yet - suspended by his club awaiting FA action.

Obviously it may have been tidied up, but i seem to remember ephedrine being prescribed for asthma in the 60s and offering a low level buzz and horrible comedown - i tried several times with various doses, just to make sure you couldn't get higher and the following day really was that bad (I had an asthmatic friend with unlimited access to the little white pills, free on the NHS).

I can't imagine what performance it could possibly enhance. Or what poverty of recreation it could offer to a well loaded professional footballer.

I believe that, behind the hype and the falsities put up by users of drugs which may be within 'normal' medicines, the tetsers can, once it is noticed in a general way, deep-drill the test to see its purity and it's balances.

That's how the authorities can distinguish between innocent use and actual abuse.

I have no idea about Paddy Kenny, but the secondary test results will define the reality of the find.

I believe that he'd already been given something by the Club Doctor for his condition. There'll be a reason why the Dr gave him the one that he did, like.

It'd be interesting if PNE sue SUFC for Kenny's appearance in the playoff semis...
