Leyton Orient 6 - 1 Newcastle

There ARE other teams(we'd have no-one to play otherwise) and here's where all-comers can discuss the wider world of football......

More importantly, the little info box says Paul Robinson "Loan". Interesting, I thought it was "undisclosed".

Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

As I said in the other Newcastle thread:

I wouldn't read anything into a result of a pre-season friendly. Although, after having seen some of the goals, I'd be writing out my P45 for that Krul in the dug out. His positioning was awful, he was slow to react to anything. He was left exposed by his defence on one occasion, but he still seemed like he'd never played in goal before.

Still, don't look at the result. We beat a Watford Academy side 8-0 today, but we're not suddenly adamant that we're all good enough to be pros. We were a tight knit unit of experienced footballer who worked hard and had prepared for the past five weeks. They were a group of individuals with great technique but absolutely no shape or communication whatsoever, who had rocked up for their first friendly of the season.

If they were trying new formations, different shapes, different approaches or new players such as a calamitous keeper, then I still wouldn't be worried in the slightest - give it up as a bad job, use the training as a back to the drawing board stuff, go back to your strengths for the next friendly to build confidence for the start of the season.

If they were using this friendly as a confidence boost, especially if players were being given 90 minutes (as a fitness thing, protocol is that the third friendly a player plays should, more often than not, be a 90 minute blow out), then it should be cause for concern.

The situation at Newcastle, as hilarious as it is, must be crap for the players and the current incumbents of the coaching staff. Completely in limbo as to futures, the players won't know who's in charge at the start of the season, so they're in the dark as to how they'll be playing then. Laugh as I might as a fan, as a coach I can certainly sympathise with players who are not being given any real direction. You could argue that it's up to Chris Hughton to take responsibility and prove how good a coach he is, but it all depends on what he's been told by the current idiots masquerading as a board as to how he's needed to prepare for pre-season.

Ah, but is he without reason here? It looks to me that they're quite laughably having a crack at zonal marking, or, if you prefer, marking fresh air. Clearly your man here is marking the wrong void!

That's true, but even as the captain it's not useful to bitch your team-mates out on the field, and Nolan doesn't even have that authority anymore.

He was captain. And yes it is useful to scream at underperforming players on the pitch, that's where it should be done.
