Bobo, tanked up on Irn Bru with a stomach stuffed full of deep fried Mars bars, gives you the gen on Scottish football. Who's been to a football match north of the border? What did you think?

Been to three games over the last few years. A Rangers v Celtic game at Ibrox, which was incredible. Hearts v Rangers Cup Final at Hampden when Gazza played and a Hearts v Hibs game on New Year's Day about 15 years ago.
All great experiences - but I don't think I fancy Alloa versus Brechin!

I wrote this some months ago in reply to Fatshaft;
Well, my fine fellow. My introduction to Scottish footie was at Firhill Park in Nov 1990. I was in Weegie visiting my then S-i-L and her Husband, a Celtic supporter originating from Lerwick. On the day Celtic were away at Aberdeen so we needed a game to see (my innocent/naive suggestion that we should go watching Rangers met with some disapproval).
Anyway, Partick were at home to Airdrie. One particular Airdrie forward had started his time there in a blaze of glory by scoring a hat-trick on his debut and setting the heather alight with his free-scoring (something somewhere deep inside is telling me that he scored three consecutive hat-tricks); I couldn't wait to see this fella. Unfortunately he failed a late fitness test and didn't play that day.
Can you guess who it was? What I forgot to mention about this game was that Chic Charnley was playing for Partick. Anyone else remember him twatting Julian Darby one at Deepdale?
And I've also been to East End Park, Dunfermline, to see Dunfermline v Celtic. My memories of that game are all to do with how utterly shite Tommy Coyne was up front for Celtic. I tell you, don't be dissing Elmander until you've seen some footage of this clown stuffing things up. Without exaggeration he wasted a good dozen sitters. He finally did manage to score one for a 1-0 victory.

I can tell you that it's home to the Falkirk Wheel if that helps.William the White wrote:Been to watch the hibees when mixu was in charge and doing a booze-and-culture weekend in the capital of north britain.
Giving serious consideration to the falkirk game... can any of our Scots posters tell me about the cultural side of falkirk?

Aye, well, from advice. Never been to either myself, but I know a few folk who went to St Andrews who all say Falkirk is shite, and Perth is awesome. I think there's racing there amongst other things, and of course, St Johnny, my own for no real reason chosen Scottish second team.CAPSLOCK wrote:A shiteholeWilliam the White wrote:Been to watch the hibees when mixu was in charge and doing a booze-and-culture weekend in the capital of north britain.

I'm sure there are many more errors in there, hopefully nothing which detracts too much.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

A stunning bit of engineering - definitely worth a detour to see. Other than that there's Callendar Park and House and, errrr, that's about it. A bit further out there's Linlithgow, site of the former Scottish royal palace, and Blackness Castle where Zeffirelli filmed bits of Hamlet.Bruce Rioja wrote:I can tell you that it's home to the Falkirk Wheel if that helps.William the White wrote:Been to watch the hibees when mixu was in charge and doing a booze-and-culture weekend in the capital of north britain.

It's a stone's throw from Falkirk.
I'm half Scottish (though Bolton-born) and lived up there in the late eighties / early nineties and went to loads of matches, including internationals. I followed Aberdeen as Mum's side of the family are from the east coast. I'm sure fatshaft will remember Theo Snelders, Hans Gillhaus, Peter van de Ven, Eoin Jess, Stewart McKimmie, Brian Irvine et al - happy times. Some of the grounds at that time were pretty dire, though - Falkirk's Brockville and Airdrie's Broomfield Park spring to mind!
Half-time refreshments offered were Bovril, Scotch Pies and jubilees. You weren't allowed to take your own in - an over-enthusiastic copper stopped me taking a small flask of coffee into Dens Park one cold night in case I used it as a missile. Tasted good after the game in the car, though. Dens gets my vote as the coldest ground in the UK!

Some parts of falkirk are real shithole like the houses near the stadium at the roundaboutPrufrock wrote:CAPSLOCK wrote:A shiteholeWilliam the White wrote:Been to watch the hibees when mixu was in charge and doing a booze-and-culture weekend in the capital of north britain.

A good read that, Bobo. I can't guarantee that I'd achieve a passmark in a test on its content, but enjoyable nonetheless.
