Poor lad. Missing out on a big tournament like that due to that Belgian's snide push in his back :whack:

Gutted for Gary.

Might be the only chance in his life to play in a major tournament and it's taken away in the cruellest of fashions.

I'd be surprised if it is his only chance! Champions League football again. Big club regular. Reckon after the Euros it will be a case of Cahill + 1.

Still gutted for him though. Think we are a lot worse with fecking Lescott in instead of him.

Not like he has had a bad few weeks either though is it, go home and stroke his Champions League winners medal.

Martin Kelly going to the Euros instead of him. Told the missus she said 'who?'. My thoughts exactly.

Roy Hodgson doing his ex-players a favour methinks. There's no way that Martin Kelly should be getting in ahead of the likes of Micah Richards. One for the future maybe but don't really think getting into the England squad when it is unwarranted is really a good indicator of a learning experience.

Gutted for Cahill. Sad that Sturridge hasn't been called up either. Not sure what Welbeck brings really but gotta say his goal and the way he won the ball up the field impressed me in his last match.

Good post this.

I'd play Welbeck before Carroll any day of the week. Carroll won't score a goal like last night's as long as he has a hole in his arse.

Regarding Andy Carroll I think theres promise there but only if we end up playing him as the main focus of our attack like Newcastle have done in Andy Caroll, then Demba Ba and now Papiss Cisse. There should be only one out and out striker in that lineup and i'm afraid with putting Ashley Young on we're not going to get that as they're constantly looking to shoot as opposed to pass to Carroll.

Regarding Ashley Young, it's a sad sad sight that a winger has now become the main threat of our attack. How poor are the strikers that we're taking his year. We're missing Darren Bent, Daniel Sturridge, Peter Crouch, Andy Johnson, Grant Holt, Bobby Zamora. I'd've been happy to see Bent in there but he's obviously injured. Crouch is probably not the one to fit into the system. Sturridge can feel really hard done by I think. Andy Johnson well theres injury to worry about. Grant Holt maybe too much too soon. Bobby Zamora hit and miss. Can't really see much difference between the ones we've left behind and the ones we're taking. There's no stand out contenders.

To be fair to Hodgson, players I'd include, like Wilshere, Rodewll, Walker etc are injured. The 2 that puzzles a little are Sturridge and Richards. But then, I suppose Defoe brings experience. Just I'm never fully convinced that he brings enough to the modern game. I think Sturridge has more in his locker, and perhaps judging the mood of apathy, he may have taken the chance to experiment, as he has nowt to lose. Really don't know why the proven-failure Johnson is still a shoo-in ahead of Richards though.

It's the Liverpool connection, Roy's going with what he knows. Sad really as Richards has had an excellent season with Man City whereas Johnson's had an uneven season with Liverpool

-----------------------

THE ONES WE ARE TAKING

GK: Hart, Green, Butland
DF: Baines, Kelly, Jagielka, Jones, Johnson, Lescott, Terry
MF: Downing, Gerrard, Henderson, Milner, Parker, Oxlaid-Chamberlain, Walcott
FW: Carroll, Rooney, Welbeck, Defoe

----------------------

THE ONES WE ARENT

GK: Foster, Robinson, Ruddy
DF: Richards, Cahill, Ferdinand, Smalling, Walker
MF: Scholes, Carrick, Barry, Lampard, Wilshire
FW: Crouch, Bent, Holt

----------------------

The team we aren't taking i'd argue was better than the one we are taking (not by much). Not only was our Premiership campaign rocked by injury but our Euro campaign is too. Who walked under a ladder?

Capello wouldn't pick him either so maybe he's burnt his boats with a few people at the FA at some point.

Pearce did though didn't he? Weird one.

Anyone it's not like Terry, Gerrard, Rooney, Cole, Carroll and the rest come without their baggage. I wouldn't mind if Walker were fit, but Martin Kelly over Richards?! He's vice captain and City too! I know Mancini isn't exactly totalitarian, but come on! Glen Johnson and Martin Kelly?!

Richards' Wikipedia page suggests he refused to go on the standby list after losing out to Phil Jones for the second RB slot which, if true, would explain why he's lost out to Kelly. I can't fathom why Johnson is first choice. The only time I've been impressed with him is the time he played right-sided midfield against us.

Johnson is shite. If that's true about Richards I can see why he hasn't gone, but what on earth was he on stand-by for anyway? Miles better than Walker, who is miles better than Johnson, who is at least a right back unlike Jones. Bizarre.

Anyway, 6 Liverpool players in there now. Should be interesting watching them managing to miss out on the top four this time!

I wonder how England's Gary Neville is taking that.

6 players from a top eight team?

It makes you wonder why Nolan, Hunt and Davies were never picked for England really.
