The Rest of League One 23/24

There ARE other teams(we'd have no-one to play otherwise) and here's where all-comers can discuss the wider world of football......

Whatmough going to Coventry apparently. He's proper shafted them. Signed a new contract in February, done almost a full pre season with them and now fecking off for free. What a great guy :D

How does the reading embargo work? They had it lifted to make some signings and it’s back on again?

Charlton and Portsmouth look strongest to me. I maintain this years league one looks more favorable to one that potentially includes a better calibre of championship relegated team and potentially a Wrexham or whoever with cash on the up next season.

James Norwood leaving Barnsley to go to Oldham. 😲. There's something odd going on there.

Got a feeling Barnsley are on the wobble. This season's MK? Perhaps not, but they could have been much harder rivals than I suspect they might be.

Seems that way. Selling your striker on the eve of a new season, to a non league team. Odd.

After losing your manager, your captain/star defender, and being hit with an EFL charge which could lead to a fine or points deduction. And this after losing in the third minute of injury time in extra time in the play-off final.

Apart from that, decent summer.

If you weren’t going to win then it was much better to lose in the semis and through your own failings than to fall short effectively on the flip of a coin.

We can learn from it. I doubt Barnsley can do the same.

We should put a tiny bid in for Luca Connell

Let's be honest, it's fantastic for us.

I felt Barnsley were in a better position than Sheff Weds to maintain themselves at this level, but it seems like this situation has taken even people at the club by surprise.

My neighbour works there and he's reached the point where he won't even discuss it. Usually people will offer platitudes, but when they stop talking it's often a bad sign.

Hopefully there's no existential threat to the club. Short of that, every bit of turmoil a rival faces is brilliant.

Wigan "talisman" James McLean looks to be heading to Wrexham the day before the new season kicks off.

More good news for the division, not having to put up with that wanker.

Indeed. Obviously not him. Bit isn’t McClean the blueprint for a winger who could do very well at wing back?

Right sort of skillset at this level. A level up? Maybe not.

As Markham has said, at this level we need to have multiple options in each position; because we can't attract players who can do it all.

In the Championship I think we'd start to look at players who are closer to offering everything we want and a plyer of McLean's profile would only get the wages he'd want from us if we went up.

Not a great day at the office for Connor Ripley.

Stuart's lad made his debut in goal for Vale, faced 8 on-target shots and let 7 of them in.

Clearly whatever their other troubles, Barnsley are not inefficient.

What a weird start to the season for some teams. This could be a fun one.

First day and all that but a bit perturbed by Barnsley and Wigan!

We can say Barnsley have already peaked, if they only win 5-0 next week, and we're only 2 weeks away from playing the Pies... :-)

As Wigan were at Derby, I'll enjoy an opening home defeat for one of the division's richest clubs with one of its most respected and successful managers. :D

Taken as a block, Wigan's opening fixtures are interesting. In the League Cup they're at Wrexham, which brings its own attention and pressures these days, but their first six league fixtures are

A Derby
H Northampton
A Carlisle
A Bolton
H Barnsley
A Blackpool

so that's four of the promotion favourites plus two recently-promoted-from-League-Two, nothing-to-lose teams. And all this against the last weeks of a transfer window that might bring more bad news than good.

Wigan and Barnsley both have decent players on their books. The questions come up when you're looking at depth.

Fair play to both of them for yesterday's results, if they keep up that level Sat-Tue-Sat-Tue all season they will be doing more than I expected.

Any 7-0 is a shock and deserves praise. A League One side with Wyke and Lang in it scoring a couple of goals definitely isn't a shocker.

Nixon says Derby look to sign one or two strikers. Already being mentioned is our towering bete noir Michael Smith, favoured target man of L1's M1-bordering promotion-chasers (Rotherham, Sheffield Wednesday, now Derby - going by geography presumably Barnsley would be interested, but Northampton may have to establish themselves first).
