Uriah Rennie: RIP

There ARE other teams(we'd have no-one to play otherwise) and here's where all-comers can discuss the wider world of football......

Uriah Rennie: RIP

Post by Mar » Tue Jun 10, 2025 8:48 am

Uriah Rennie has unfortunately passed away, and while most wouldn't make the news, the fact that he was the first black referee in the Premier League has probably elevated the news. Rest In Peace.

While a referee passing wouldn't usually garner a thread, I do have fond memories of his refereeing. It felt that whenever he was refereeing we got a fair match and the games didn't court controversy unlike Clattenburg or Foy.

Did anyone else get this impression?

I suspect it's probably from our record when he refereed, which stands at:
P23 W14 D6 L3

Only Spurs and Everton were refereed more from him, but we have the best record when playing under him.

Strangely enough, we only had him in one of our matches against the so called top 4 where we got a 1-0 win over Liverpool in 2004. 17 Premiership games and only one big game match for us (5.8% of matches).

(For contrast, we were refereed 32 times by Clattenburg: P32W11D10L11, 28 Premiership games (8 were against the top 4 teams or 28.57% if you prefer, 10 if you included Spurs)

RIP. Very sad news.

I think he certainly was one of the best referees at the time and we certainly seemed to do well with him in charge.

Most famously obviously the win against Preston to get us back into the premiership. I think having come through the divisions and knew us he was more sympathetic to us than the litany of fame seeking premiership refs.
