Even accepting the fact we're still currently operating under Uncle Ken's if-you're-cold-put-a-jumper-on budget, this might help put this summer's approach to business into a bit of perspective: Tyler Walker has today gone on a season-long loan to... Mansfield Town.

Presuming Amos heads out somewhere again and we need a cheap-ish 2nd/3rd choice GK mixing with Turner (tho personally I hope Jake is entrusted as No. 2 (and we just give Paul Rachubka CPR and a packet of Space Raiders if Alnwick gets injured etc.) then there could perhaps be worse in Jake Kean? Jake Kean, one of those professional back-up keepers. Nobody knows anything about him because he only exists to sit on benches. I'm told he has excellent posture, so sign him up.

I kind've feel sorry for GKs like that. Should I? I suppose there's guys who take being a journeyman back-up 'keeper over a guaranteed place. For him I guess it would be 150, 200k a year with no pressure other than the EFL Cup and a slight Gollum-like desire for Alnwick to do his ankle in Vs 50k, 75k a year as a No. 1 in L2 with a chance of getting a No. 1 spot somewhere better but equally a chance of letting in four against Mansfield's Tyler Walker and all of a sudden begging Wrexam to take him out on loan in January.

GKs certainly in a class of their own. Don't really envy them.

Never rated Rodwell, never got the fuss, he's a tweener at best. Might have made a centreback, but don't know what Everton saw in him in the midfield except they were ultra short team at that stage. Might be worth a cheap punt if he pulls his head in.

We're doing okay thus far, considering. Re-signing Amoebi was a big hurdle and gives us a bit of stability.

Lowe comes in in a position we desperately needed and is decent enough - certainly a Championship player. Vital experience.

Otzumer may well be a good bit of business, but that'll depend on having bigger lads look after him. He's 5'3". That's 4" shorter than Messi. Technical ability doesn't seem to be in doubt. Hopefully he's a tough little bastard.

Donaldson improves the squad. Again, vital experience.

You've then arguably got Pritchard and Johnson who may compete (Duke-McKenna arguably less likely to at his age), I think they were in the preseason shots with the senior lads. So if you count them and Ameobi we are 6 players up. We do need a load more, but I didn't expect us to have half a dozen deals done by this stage. I thought we'd be lumbering along having signed maybe two.

Trotters boss Phil Parkinson is looking to beef up his attack following the January departure of Gary Madine to promoted Cardiff City.

Garner was piss poor at a couple of clubs, but has generally had a very solid career. Remains to be seen how badly that fractured skull has affected him, but given that he's seen as having had a poor season at Ipswich and still has 1 in 3 I'd welcome him. Another local lad too, along with Lowe. Should see them settle very quickly.
