Really pleased with this signing, exactly the type of striker we need - big, pacy & powerful. I know a few Cov fans who all rate this guy.

Not prolific, but works his socks off and apparently is only 25 & has improved year on year at Cov. Very good signing IMO especially for League 1
Does he run out to 'One in Ten'?

I hope to be proved hopelessly wrong, but right now I'm a tad underwhelmed.

If I said it was Friday you would say its Thursday just to disagree, so your comments are hardly surprising - time will tell if he's decent or not which is the case with most signings at this level, but I'm only going off what I've been told.

I'm sure many said similar to what you have just said when we signed Ricketts.

Someone has to be wrong. Let's just hope he can do what Evatt needs him to do.

I think we can all accept he's not a "marquee signing" and he's unlikely to storm to league. He looks like a component player in a good squad.

To my money we haven’t signed anyone who is proven at league one level or top end of league one. So I think it’s unlike last summer where we went and got some of the best league two players. We are signing players who might do it or not and probably we will see mixed results. I think we need to see how they do and it’s hard to judge anyone right now.

I sort of agree and disagree on this one, but certainly agree with your overall point.

We've certainly not signed anyone who is definitely a Championship level player right now. I think the fact Baka was part of the Coventry side that finished 8th one season and 1st the next probably means he counts as at least proven at this level. Before that he had two full seasons with a sort of midtable Walsall side where he was regarded as one of the better players. He shouldn't look like a raw talent at 25, but I think he does. Hopefully we can polish him more.

Everyone in our squad absolutely has something to prove. I actually think that's a good thing. What I have wanted to avoid seeing is journeymen. Aimson is a bit of that, but generally I think we've signed players who haven't fulfilled their potential for legitimate reasons and who are looking to make a point. It makes us unpredictable, I grant you, but I'd rather that than a load of duffers just here for the wage.

GOTB my take on this is that we have signed several decent hungry players with a lot of potential, who also appear to have the right work ethic & attitude. They are all capable of playing at League 1 level but the club are obviously hopeful that 1 or 2 of them may really shine and show championship level form and bring in a bob or two if sold on.

The signings so far IMO have been excellent, more than enough to ensure a comfortable mid table League 1 season & if they play to their full potential could at a pinch get us into the play offs which IMO would be remarkable next season.

Yeah I think some signings will work some will not. That’s football especially in the market we are shopping in. As we’ve gone on I would suggest we are signing less proven players and bigger risks. Aimson, Dixon Bakayoko. They may be great but their record also suggest they could not work out one way or another. But it’s what happens when you are restricted to frees and shopping a level up.

Yeah. I mean January was kind of a freak window in terms of success rates and even then we had one failed transfer that couldn't have been predicted. Last summer was a storm of chaos, but the failure rate was probably more normal than we'd like to think.

Sheehan will live and die on his physicality. Johnston is really inexperienced. Aimson struggles to stay fit. Dixon was very average in League Two. Bakayoko hasn't been a main starter for ages.

It looks more like last summer than it does like January, but there's also reason to back all those signings too. Sheehan clearly too good for League Two as a footballer, Johnston coming from Feyenoord and having a very strong 6 months in League One, Aimson winning a number of promotions, Baka also a promotion winner etc.

Like you say, when you have no money you are always looking at what a player might be rather than what he currently is. We've certainly not done enough to float HMS Piss The League. In my "we can potentially win the league" thread I said we needed top class forwards (for this level) to do that....seems like that's not going to happen. Or if it does happen, it'll be because we made them into that with coaching and the right system.

I haven't seen these new players play before but I am happy that we are signing players. Based on Wikki and comments here, they are good players for the level we are at. I expect a couple young talented players from the Premiership/Championship to join us later in the transfer window to compliment this solid set of players we currently have. The plus for me is that we are not signing players at the end of their careers, and we are investing in players who, if they improve and do very well this season, will have great selling-on value. A good strategy in my opinion as the owners run a business.

I think this is generally well said. The players we have the most faith in (and who probably have the most resale value) get 3 years and the others get 2. There's still room for the odd loan.

Where I agree with some of the more pessimistic stuff is that I take Evatt at his word when he says he has a genuine ambition to win the league. I am not naïve and I recognise the need for financial prudence and how difficult it is to sign certain kinds of players - but at the minute this doesn't look like a title challenging side. I think I'm going to really like Baka as a player, but we will need to see at least one player come in who is a class above (as we saw in January). Baka could solve a tactical issue, but if he can't increase his goal tally he solves one issue and causes another. Like I say, still pleased to have him.

I believe in the system and the style of football we want to play and I do think that matters. I think we will be greater than the sum of our parts. But ultimately we brought in better players in January than anyone else could at that level and it was quality that told. We had enough depth in midfield to see the engine room through tough runs and we compensated for the obvious squad issues we had (lack of pace and power in the side etc) with good displays in that department and solid defending. After January our 11 was just too good for League Two. Next season our 11 will not be too good for League One, so we need one or two players who definitely are if we are going to challenge.

I won't cry into my porridge if we have a midtable season, but I want to go up and so the best signings we've made so far need to be the minimum standard for the remaining signings, excluding perhaps left back.

Again, personal opinion.

The new lad seems to be well thought of at Plymouth, according to the MEN, although it does seem to be based on a few twitter comments only.
I think we'll be waiting a good while for the forward line reinforcements.
I wouldnt say that he came to us injured from Bury. Meant to be a few matches out but reality you could count on one hand the number of appearances in the firat season.
Last season well the first thing is that he was part of defence that had the third highest goals against record thoughtout all four divisions. The defence though was mainly made up with loans u23 and it told. As for will aimson he is good with the ball at his feet but against a burly centreforward not so clever. Consensus down here he is better in a back four than a back three.
Cheers, friend. Intriguing that the consensus is he suits a four more than a three, given he's had triple promotions in a three. I won't argue with consensus, but I wonder if there's an element of him just not fitting? Did he excel in a four?
Yes three promotions on paper looks good until you see that with Blackpool he played 18 matches that season and with us he played five games. Last season when playing a back three he played on the right of the three this meant he was covering the wing back position as well when he went caught out upfield. The season before in the matches I seen him he was in the centre of the three and looked more comfortable. A back four suiting him I put down to he has got cover either side if him. He isn't a bad player but he is never going to pull up trees for you but with the right players alongside him will do the job.

I suspect Bakayoko will be played on the right, in Isgroves position. I think that's a very decent upgrade, I'm not ITK or anything -I'd never even heard of him until today- but he's tall so he might be able to provide that outball that we missed when Kioso left. From Youtube clips he looks quick and skillful and seems a hard working, unselfish player. I'm quite surprised at his goal tally given the quality finishes he managed for Walsall. Let's hope this is one of those very good signings that sneak under the radar, right manager, right system, right time etc., he certainly has all the raw attributes. If you haven't already, check out his Walsall highlights.

Possible. Evatt described him as a centre forward and the descriptions from a lot of Coventry fans don't marry with the player I've seen in the past, so who knows.

If we sign another striker then awesome. I'd love to see another goal scorer on the books. Miller was vital off the bench last season.

It would be quite surprising if we didn’t sign another striker, no? This lad sounds like he’ll be an option off the bench to give us a different dimension, but his goal scoring record suggests he’s not going to be genuine competition for Doyle.

We are going to have to accept in some games this season we will have considerably less of the ball than we did last season. So we will need an outlet. It’s no good having a goalscorer up front if you can’t get out so Baka might offer one such avenue. We’ve needed a different option up front and he provides it. I suspect there are times Doyle won’t work as a line striker in this division and I fear that may be more often than we’d like.
