Aye. Derby were one of the first clubs I had a nosey round a month ago, as recent promotees who have since had a managerial switch. Here's what I said then...
JEFF HENDRICK (33) - Coming to the end of a short-term Derby contract, the Irish midfielder might add a touch of nous. Not so much a sitting 6 as a hard-working play-anywhere type. 409 games in the top two tiers, but hasn't played much over the last two seasons - maybe give him a trial, Sexy Kieran-style?

TOM BARKHUIZEN (32 in July) - Was linked with us before joining Derby in summer 2022. He helped them up but has drifted from the first team and an extension looks unlikely. Could the either-side winger return to Lancashire?

MARCUS HARNESS (29) - Helped Ipswich to back-to-back promotions and played a couple of early Premier League games before moving to Derby on loan. Ipswich have an extension option and will be back in the second tier, but have they moved on from him?

JERRY YATES (28) - Promoted from this division with Rotherham in 2018 and Blackpool in 2021 (with 20 goals), he was signed for Swansea by Michael Duff (remember him?) in summer 2023. Scored 8 in 43 second-tier games in his first season but this term was loaned out to Derby (9 in 38 so far). Still has a season on his Swansea contract but could be borrowable - but would he prefer (and secure) a second-tier destination?
Of the others...
Sonny Bradley - will tickle a lot of people's fancy as an aerially dominant, experienced centre-back. I get that, but I'm not sure I'd be 100% confident in signing someone who's 34 in September and isn't exactly pacy.
Erik Pieters - he's 37 by the time the season kicks off and we don't need another not-very-tall left-footed centre-back (he's barely played left-back since Boris Johnson was in power).
Tyrese Fornah - 6ft+ defensive midfielder, fairly comfortable on the ball who's recently been playing regularly - all good. Less good that those regular games have been in the fourth division with Salford, but he wouldn't be the worst player to be linked with.
Rohan Luthra - young keeper whose only loans have been to non-league clubs? Got one, thanks.
Kemar Roofe - has had a bad three seasons (five if you're one of those that doesn't count scoring for the Old Firm as success). 32 so not getting any younger, quicker or less injury-prone. I'd worry.
Conor Washington - we were linked when he was scorting regularly for Charlton, but since moving to the second tier with Rotherham in summer 2022 he's scored 6 in a 37-game season for the Millers, then 3 in 22 for Derby (while they got promoted!), then zero senior apps last season. Turns 33 on Sunday.

I'm starting to hope we have some calibre loanees lined up. I look through these lists, generally, from the perspective of who's name fits best in a terrace chant. (Not a criticism of a wonderful and time consuming bit of work/leisure, mate). It's difficult to get "inspired," by nearly all of 'em.

West London Sport saying we are looking at QPR keeper Murphy Cooper. He was on loan at Stevenage this season and played well, appearing in 37 league games (though by the season-closer at our place they'd let their own keeper Ashby-Hammond have a go). They certainly want him back (with "a number of other clubs" also interested), and it's said to be more likely he'll be loaned than sold as the Hoops reckon he's a future first-teamer.

Taking Worthy's "terrace chant" steer, I suppose we could go with something along the lines of:

We've got Murphy Cooper,
He used to be a Hooper,
But now he's a Schuper Trouper.

Or should I get my coat?

Depending on the tune I imagine it'd need a fourth line, perhaps something something party pooper

You're right, of course. I know it doesn't quite work, but, I'd be in favour of a fourth line that somehow incorporates "snooker loopy".

That's a winner. Get him signed. About the only song I can get it to fit is Ruby Tuesday, which isn't bad, but might perpetuate the "not proper footballers, play like Arsenal," tag...

Sounds a bit desperate considering we ain't even got him. Amarilo" might work with

"Is this the way to the way to be a Schuper,
Cos we all know the Whites are super,
Show me the way to top the grouper
Division three goodbye from me..

Sh la la, la la la la
Sh la la, la la la la
Sh la la, la la la la
Division three goodbye from me! "

Then again, might not...

Ha that's good fun – though it doesn't mention the player. Could start with "We gave the gloves to Murphy Cooper".

God we're bored.

^^ Tis usually the way until the window "flies open." prior to it slamming shut, then opening again, this year.

Going to be a long summer. I have pretty low expectations tbh. Doesn’t appear like we have much to spend - it’s clear to anyone that we need a substantial amount adding to the squad to be really competitive and have limited spaces to fill with little prospect of creating new ones.

New sporting director, new recruitment bod who haven’t even started yet and these things take time to get going and working well.

I think the thing is that we mustn’t rush in and saddle the club with the wrong players. If it takes another season as depressing a thought as that is - that is better than signing absolute dross like we did last summer and then being stuck with it. Cos that means we can write off more and more seasons.

That's the spirit. Avoiding relegation will seem a real plus then?

I’m sorta in the middle of you two. I’d be disappointed if we aren’t top six. Not sure it’d be a sacking offence if there are extenuating circumstances.
