A name that I wonder might be on our radar is Ethan Wheatley. 19 year old Stockport born striker who's currently on United's books, but presumably won't get much of a sniff there this season with their expected incomings.

Disappointing loan spell with Walsall at the back-end of last season, but scored a couple for England U19s at their Euros, has been a regular goalscorer at youth level, and at 6'2" looks robust enough to cope with the demands of men's football.

Absolutely no insight into whether he's suitable for us or not, but I should imagine that he'll at least be available.

Surely if he can't shine whilst at a League Two club, he'll likely struggle at a League One club. As for his goal record, it looks good in the Premier League 2 level, but that level makes Shola Shoretire look good.

Unless we've done significant research on players at United, at that level, i'd be shying away from them. Their catchment isn't as good as it used to be and the structure of the club doesn't seem overly well run, so even players coming through I wouldn't be expecting them to be as well coached as say their Arsenal/City/Chelsea counterparts.

Transfermarkt has him on 6 goals from 9 games in the PL2. Seems reasonably good, but there's other players at the same competition level that may be worth pursuing before him. Divin Mubama (16 goals), Donnell McNeilly (13), Khayon Edwards (11) and Jake Evans (11).

What isn't overly clear however is the physicality of those players, so you may be right with Wheatley (I haven't seen him play), but we'll see.

Stats can paint a strange picture. Conor Bradley got 4 goals and 9 assists in 36 PL2 appearances. Hopefully we'll sign someone of that calibre.

All fair comment but out of interest I looked those lads up...
• Divin Mubama's just joined Stoke on loan
• Donnell McNeilly rejected a Chelsea contract and is a free agent (but would presumably cost a development fee); I imagine he ain't targeting the third tier
• Khayon Edwards (who got 0 in 7 for Orient last year) has joined Portuguese top-flighters Estoril on a permanent
• Jake Evans is still at Leicester, but then he is still only 16

Just out of interest, if McNeilly was to join say Chorley for instance would the development fee get waived? Seems like development fee is a preventative measure for them progressing their career. Presumably he could then get loaned to us on a free. Shady dealings of course, but I did have to wonder how the system would handle that.

I just figured United didn't have the best youth at the moment and we could possibly aim a tad higher, especially given our ability to bring Trafford and Bradley through. We must be a desirable target for some of these looking for a pathway into the Prem.

Not sure such an extreme situation has ever arisen. The key is that Chelsea, who reared him, offered him an extension that he rejected. Had they turned him loose then anyone could have had him; but because they offered him a contract they’re legally protected from scalping, which you have to say is fair, even if it’s Chelsea.

As it is, he’s said to have several EFL teams interested and to be targeting the one with the best path to the first team. So maybe…

Lots of lads with that profile wouldn’t be what we need, but some would come in and immediately be our best player. It’s about identifying the right ones.

We put 8? Past one team up? Folks crowed about our well oiled machine.

Most of there kids won't make it, like most of ours. I think I read the conversion rate was somewhere near 5%?

That doesn't mean there's nothing we might be able to work with or find an exception. Shortire wasn't it.

Shoretire, after a bright start, was pretty poor in the end. He was still light years ahead of the older, more experienced Etete though. Possibly our worst loan signing since Nigel Jemson.
