Progress under Coyle....?

Post by Peter Thompson » Sun May 22, 2011 8:11 pm

Not convinced myself....we have only really played well in 6 or 7 (out of 38) games this season and apart from those games our style and standard of football hasn't really improved, I expected a lot more from Owen Coyle this season especially after our good start.

IMO he's very naive tactically....but I'm not sure whether he's actually over achieved and worked miracles this season (14th place), with a shocking bunch of very average players or if 14th place is about all we can expect with this squad of players - which means OC hasn't improved us that much

Massive pre season ahead for OC, he needs to grow a very big pair and get shut of most of todays team and somehow try and bring in 6-7 players -Yes we actually do need that many....all the progress he made pre Wembley has unfortunately almost eroded since and a lot of fans where very scathing afterwards...as we stand today the Coyle feel good factor has disappeared and he has a lot of hard work in the summer to redress this...because we have some poor players in our team who are clearly not premiership standard and he has to be ruthless and get shut - obviously though he needs backing from the Eddie and the board in terms of replacements.

I still think he's the right manager to move us forward but he needs to seriously improve us this pre season....

The funny thing is I think he is. Ridiculous post. You can pinpoint the exact two occasions when the season went from being great to being slightly disappointing and that's Old Trafford/Wembley

Indeed.

We've progressed. The big question now is if this (fairly large) pothole in the road is going to force the wheels to come off.

I bloody well hope not. I want more of this, bar the last 6 weeks.

Some people thrive about our mediocrity.

They only post when it's not going well.

For me. The season has ended disappointing. Very disappointing.

But this is the lowest we could have finished all season. Better than most recent seasons, When this would have been our peak.

We are the one and only Wanderers.

Indeed so Worthy.

To be dissapointed at not finishing in the top 10 is a far cry from hanging on for safety. It's been a completely different season to the the last few and we've had some cracking games and a decent cup run.

For me the first eleven, when fit, was a top half team. Unfortunately, injuries and lack of depth has been our ruin in the latter stages.

Onwards and upwards. Good times.

Peter Thompson as a player was five seasons of delight... A brilliant left winger who tormented the opposition game after game and delighted the Burnden Paddock...

In my team were I ever asked to select a 'best ever' bunch...

Whereas Peter Thompson the poster is entirely different...

Which, imho, is a shame...

Take Stuart Holden out of the squad and we've clearly not progressed at all.

The big question is whether Coyle can unearth "more Stuart Holdens" or whether that was a one off fluke.

The dissapointing thing for me is that not one of Coyle's signings last summer have made an impact. We need that to change this summer.

Ultimately as ever you can only judge the season on its finishing position and 14th is adequate but dissapointing at the same time. It could well be that it doesn't matter who we have in charge, Megson, Mourinho, Coyle etc 13th/14th may well be about as good as we can do come the end of the season. When you're carrying a small squad its bound to catch up with you at some point. But the signings of Petrov, Alonso, Rodrigo, Klasnic have hardly chipped in at a time when we could have used some of those backup players to freshen things up.

So, take the progress out of the progress, and we haven't progressed.

You love a good moan don't you?

Most points since 2006-07, furthest in the cups since 2004, at times some of the best play we've seen since The Galacticos were in their pomp.

Bring back Megson, it clearly hasn't changed.

Our confidence got shattered after Stoke the most embarrassing game i've seen us play this year, Coyle is a great manager and the one to take us forward give hime the time of Big Sam and we will be in Europe soon enough. This summers transfers will be pivital as he can get rid of some of the dross that has accumulated in the squad and bring in some new exciting players, please get some defenders and a striker.
Glad to see Elmander leaving He did well to get himself a contract elsewhere as he has been dog sh*t for the past 2 seasons and then turns it on the season his contracts up, does make you thing.
Have full faith in Coyle's transfers and looking forward to see Sturridge back nxt season :pissed:

Of the 14 who saw action against Man City, it looks like Cohen and Gardner will be released today (along with JOB, JLS and Blake), Elmander is leaving, Sturridge's loan ends, Moreno's loan ends and Cahill will probably be off. So that's six out of the 14, not bad so far.

If he grew such a big pair that he bounced into his office on a fleshy one-handled space-hopper and managed to get rid of all 14 who saw action today, by my reckoning that would leave us with Al-Habsi or Bogdan in goal, Wheater, Ricketts and Alonso in defence, a decent midfield of Muamba, Holden, Mavis, Sean Davis, Petrov servicing our front pairing of Tom Eaves and Danny Ward. Yeah, we might need some players if that happened...
