Brian Bromley passed away

Hi guys, Birmingham fan living in Pompey here to give you guys some sadnews about an ex-player of yours.

Brian Bromley, who I believe played for you in the early - mid 60's (and also for Pompey)passed away in Southampton General Hospital yesterday.

After leaving the football scene, he did what many ex-playersof that era did and became a Publican in the Portsmouth area.
For as long as I've lived down here, he's been a regular in all of the local pubs, sitting quietly, mostly un noticed by the majority of the other punters.

I saw Bromley (everyone calls him that) very regularly over the past 10 years or so.
Always had a little chat or a quick "Hello". When I first started chatting to him, I didn't know he was an ex-player. In fact, he never once mentioned the fact to me.

Was told this news last night by some of the guys in the local social club where I am a member and Bromley worked as a bar man off and on for some time.

On Tuesday, he looked very ill and was advised by a friend of mine to go home. He was back in the club on Wednesday and looked even worse. He was taken to the QA in Portsmouth on Wednesday and transfered to Southampton on Thursday.
He passed away on Friday in the hospital. He was 65 years old.

Brian was the Best man at ex-Birmingham and now PFA secretary Gordan Taylor's wedding, as well as being friends with many other ex-footballers from the 60's and 70's.

No details of funeral yet, but it is 99% certain that it will be at Portchester Crem, just outside Pompey.

Remember Brian well, used to speak to us as teenagers when we watched training at Bromwich St, also supplied us with a few complimentarys when he saw us at away games. Genuine bloke . RIP.

I recall him being sold and my dad pronouncing that this signified that we were no longer looking to return to the First Divion any time soon.

For a good while I watched his progress (via the papers, that being the only way back then) & was, very simply, a solid, high class professional.

Very greatful, Bluenose, to be kept up to take. 65 is no real age. I hope he wa a generally happy gentleman in his later years. RIP.

Bobo, he always seemed happy enough to me. He walked his dog regularly and then spent a lot of his time spread between half a dozen or so pubs.

He spent a lot of his time in the Social club I use (thoug I usually saw him in the other pubs).
The majority of the blokes in the "club" are in their 60's, 70;s or 80's, so all knew im and he had a lot of respect / friends, thoug he was a bit of a "loner" in some respects.

I'm too young (mid 40's) to remember his playing days, but having been out in the local pubs this afternoon, there is genuine shock at his death.

A lot of these "Older Players" may have been forgotten by the vast majority of the "modern fan/player". Though I never saw him play, I'm glad that some of you guys may have fond memories of him.

BTW - I hope you survive this season (even though I've got money on Welshburn, Wigwam and your lor to go down as a "rather good" treble.

One of my early childhood heroes. I can remember him running riot amongst Division 2 defences ably assisted by Hill, Lee, Taylor and Co.

The first couple of games every season he always turned up with a frightening suntan, presumably picked up on some Iberian beach. He was orange before Essex girls made it fashionable.

No confirmed cause of death yet, on Tuesday he looked dreadful.
On Wednesday he was "Yellow".
He was a regular in many pubs around here - probably had a dozen or so beers most days.

I could speculate and probably be right, but I think it's best to let him RIP.
