Post by SWFC_FAN » Mon Aug 13, 2012 10:47 am

Hello, Sheffield Wednesday fan here,

My latest blog is a preview of the up and coming Championship season. I'd appreciate it if you liked it and share it with others.

Feel free to give me some feedback. Do you agree with me? Are my predictions accurate?

Thankyou,

I'll give it a look on my lunch break mate.

So, I'd better get this out of the way before the inevitable barrage of questions: Thoughts on the reign of Gary Megson?

Knew this would come up :D

I loved Megson, partly because he loved the club and has been a lifelong Wednesdayite. He got the fans believing again and reminded us that we should take pride in our club despite the position we were in. His interviews were honest and really spoke to the fans. Also footballing wise he did well, he brought in some solid players and got them super fit, were were far too powerful for the competition in League One. He took us to third place, and was sacked after the victory against Sheffield United. The fans were livid, because to be fair he did nothing to merit being sacked. Obviously it was a dispute between Mandaric and Megson which led to the sacking.

We brough Dave Jones in and he's a better manager to be fair. He gets the ball on the ground and plays the simpe stuff. At times i wondered whether Megson was too concerened about the opposition and defending a lead, rather tahn just going for it and attacking teams. The football at times was frustrating under Megson, because we had talented players but we were more bothered about using set pieces and long throwings to get goals.

Overall he did well for us and left us in a strong position. He's a good managet for picking a broken team up and installing passion back into them and grinding out results when you need them. But give me a Dave Jones, a footballing manager, over Megson.

That's a decent enough breakdown of things. To be honest I could always understand SWFC fans feeling better about Megson's appointment than we did. He had more going for him when he came to you than he did to us, with him coming off the back of BWFC and Europe to go to SWFC as an ex-player and local hero. Contrast that with him arriving at ours off the back of several uneventful stints managing the likes of Leicester and Forest, and coming to a club still haunted by the ghost of Sam Allardyce... it was always going to be a difficult task.

Coupled with his immediate refusal to engage the fans displeased at his appointment, it was never going to work. I actually think that if he'd made the effort to engage fans at the BWSA meeting he might have had a chance at a relationship with us, and I feel it was a catastrophic error of judgement that permanently alienated him from us.

He did make some decent signings for us (and some bad), and I'm sure we can all relate to his fixation on always having 11 players behind the ball. At times watching the football under Megson had me wanting to tear my own eyeballs out.
