I'm on the fence with Appleton.

I think the BWFC job is a world away from his current 'trenches' environment, and one wonders if geeing players up to help keep the club ticking over so they can be guaranteed their wages or (probably now meager) bonuses is good expereince enough for a more settled environment.

But i have no knowledge of his background or reputation.

Some info on Appleton.

I wonder if the friendly game against Portsmouth in August has had a hand in this alleged interest?

I saw that too.

I admired the way he said some days he'd be on the way to training and just pull over and cry at the hopelessnes of it all, the tell himself he'd have to pul himself together because he had to go there and keep the players focused and be the strong leader they needed.

You 've got to say he's not afraid of a challenge. This new manager thing is a bit of a minefield. The disparity of opinion and range of suggestions here shows how difficult it is. Still at least we're mostly in the position of being able to call gartside a hopeless bellend if the next one doesnt work out.

Pretty much how I see it though I completely understand the naysayers. I just cant see the board taking a chance on someone from the lower leagues or abroad. A friend of mine who follows sunderland thinks highly of him still. He has got teams up but hasnt had much money to keep them up. He does seem a bit old fashioned and maybe out of touch tactics wise but always seems to foster a good spirit and signs /sells well. I doubt there is anyone out there who will satisfy everyone.

Is a decent season at Molde really evidence of a managerial genius?
More than that in fairness. They'd never won the Norweigan League. If that's decent, I'd like to see good.

We've never won the English League. JSL...:D
FC Twente had never won the Dutch league before McClaren went there and won it with them.

McClaren in........

Solskjaer may be an excellent manager. However, I'd contest that he's totally untested, a novice and rather like Coyle, we'd be judging him off 1 or two years where everything has gone well. Worse than that, he's not exactly managing in a top league.

He's worth talking to for sure, if he's interested. But for me, it would be like closing your eyes and throwing a dart and hoping it hits.

Perhaps they are after that high risk/reward appointment. But we had that with the last guy and it didn't work.

I'd personally, prefer a safe pair of hands for now, to steer us back on course.

I'd certainly be unhappy if we overlooked Freedman and Keith Hill and didn't speak to them, (if young and promising is what we're after) and went straight for Solskjaer. As at least those two have and do operate in the division we're in.

How long would it take Ole Gunnar to get up to speed? If he ever could.........

Club want new manager to work under director of football (Sammy Lee).

New manager should not make too many staff changes as board feel we've got top staff throughout and many are being promoted to senior roles.

Appleton told up front that OGS is first choice should he want it. No direct contact has been made with him as of yesterday afternoon. But concerns over wether or not he'd be happy leaving the bulk of his staff behind.

Mick McCarthy way down the pecking order.

There'll be money to spend in January if we're pushing the top 6.
Just doesn't feel right to me...

Either we're shit at interviewing, or the source isn't quite right.

I can't imagine we've intereviewed a guy from another club, this quickly. And if we have and told him "you're not first choice" but some bloke we've not spoken to yet is?

Doesn't ring true.

But then again to quote Sammy Lee "nothing surprises me in football".

I would worry that Appleton has done little other than hold a Portsmouth side together under incredibly testing circumstances. Admirable in itself, but he's not really had results pressure to deal with.

My gut reaction, without knowing a lot about Appleton, and just a gut reaction, Appleton and Lee, pair of losers.
The source is Ashley Westwood

Appleton - very, very highly rated when at West Brom as a coach. They thought it was only a matter of time before he got a managing job. Pompey came a-knocking and off he went. Hard to judge him given the shambles Portsmouth currently are. When Gartside said a young manager used to working on a budget... :o.

And I'm not saying 'get Solksjaer', I'm saying, no matter how you cut it, winning the league at a club who have never won it is a good season. Somewhat better than 'decent'. I'd go as far as to say Steve had a more than decent season at Twente, no? I'd not be happy if it was just given to Solskjaer with talking to him. I like that we are interviewing people, though it does seem odd to be telling folk they are definitely not first choice. Bit Souness-esque.
